Why Your Monitor Keeps Going Black

Intermittent signal loss and windows rearranging themselves are cable and handshake faults, not monitor faults. The cheap parts that fix each one.

An intermittent black screen is nearly always the cable or the connection, not the monitor. Windows rearranging when a display sleeps is something else entirely — a handshake problem — and it has its own inexpensive fix. Neither warrants a new monitor.

The problem, as it appears

Three distinct symptoms get lumped together.

The screen goes black for a second and comes back, occasionally or under load. Or the machine boots to nothing at all, and a reseat fixes it for a week. Or — a completely different complaint — everything works, but when a second monitor sleeps or switches input, every window on it stampedes onto the remaining screen and does not go back.

The first two are physical. The third is not, and treating it as though it were is why people buy cables that change nothing.

Why replacing the monitor disappoints

Because the monitor is the most expensive part of the chain and the least likely culprit. A panel that fails tends to fail visibly and permanently — lines, backlight problems, dead regions — not intermittently and cleanly.

The cable, by contrast, is cheap, gets flexed every time the machine moves, hangs under its own weight at both connectors, and is frequently whatever came in a box years ago. It is the part that is both most stressed and least considered.

What actually matters

Whether the connector is seated and latched. DisplayPort connectors have a latch and a worn one works loose under cable weight. HDMI has no latch at all, so a heavy cable hanging off a rear-facing port slowly withdraws itself.

Whether the cable is rated for the mode in use. High resolution at high refresh is demanding, and a cable that works at a lower setting can fail intermittently at a higher one — which produces the classic "only goes black in games" pattern, since that is when the machine drives the highest bandwidth.

Whether strain is reaching the plug. A cable hanging its full weight off the port is applying constant load. Securing it a short distance behind the connector removes that entirely.

Whether it is a signal problem at all. The window-rearranging symptom is the graphics driver responding to a display that stopped identifying itself. No cable fixes that.

The options, and who each suits

A better-quality cable, secured suits the first two symptoms and is the correct starting point. Buy one rated for the resolution and refresh rate combination you actually use, and clip it behind the connector so its weight is not on the port.

The mistake to avoid

Diagnosing by swapping several things at once. Change the cable, use it for a few days, then change something else. Intermittent faults reward patience and punish parallel changes, because when the symptom stops you want to know which change stopped it.

The second mistake is buying an expensive cable to fix the window-rearranging problem. They are unrelated faults — one is bandwidth and connection integrity, the other is display identification — and the correct part for the second costs very little and is not sold as a cable at all.
