Ugly Things That Make a PC Quieter

Rubber washers, bitumen sheets and a plastic box cable-tied behind the motherboard tray. None of them photograph well and all of them work.

Everything on this list is visually unappealing, hidden inside a case, and effective. The organising principle: it must reduce noise measurably, it must not be a fan swap chosen on a marketing figure, and it must survive an honest look at what it costs in airflow.

They are ordered by how much noise they remove per pound spent, which puts a bag of rubber washers first and the fans people usually buy first much further down.

Rubber grommets and stepped screws

A mechanical hard drive bolted into a steel cage transmits its vibration into the chassis, and a steel panel with a vibration source attached behaves as a loudspeaker.

Check the screws are shouldered. A standard screw crushes the grommet and restores the rigid path.

Intake filters

Filters do not muffle anything. They keep heatsinks clean, so fans do not have to spin faster to compensate for blocked fins — which is where most "my PC got louder" actually originates.

Better fans, bought on airflow at a stated noise level rather than on a noise figure alone.

What was deliberately left out

Water cooling. It relocates heat rather than removing the need to move air, and a pump is an additional noise source with its own failure modes. Not wrong; a much larger decision than anything here.

Fanless power supplies and passive coolers. Genuinely silent and genuinely constrained by what they can dissipate. They belong in a build decision, not in a list of fixes for an existing machine.

Acoustic foam on the room's walls. A different problem — that is room acoustics, and it does nothing for a case radiating noise from a metre away. Do acoustic panels improve gaming audio covers it.

Anything sold on being silent without a stated airflow figure. Silence is easy to achieve by moving less air, and a machine that throttles ends up with its fans at full speed anyway.

What is the cheapest thing that makes a PC quieter?
Rubber grommets on a mechanical hard drive, by a wide margin. A bag of washers and stepped screws costs very little and removes an entire band of noise that no fan change addresses.
Does making a PC quieter make it hotter?
Every measure here trades some airflow for quiet, except cleaning. That is why the list starts with the items that reduce how hard the fans need to work rather than the ones that muffle them.
Will these work on a mesh-fronted case?
The decoupling ones will. Dampening material will not, because an airflow-focused case has very little solid panel to treat and covering its mesh trades noise for heat.
