Why a Gaming PC Gets Loud, and What Fixes It
Fan whine and case rattle sound similar and have nothing in common. Telling them apart first is why some people fix the noise and others buy fans twice.

Before buying anything, work out whether the noise is aerodynamic or mechanical. Air noise comes from fans moving air and rises with load. Mechanical noise comes from something vibrating against something else and is frequently worse at idle. They sound broadly similar through a closed panel, and they have completely different fixes.

The problem, as it appears
A machine that was acceptable when it was built is now noticeable, and the assumption is that the fans have worn out. Sometimes they have. More often nothing has failed at all — the heatsinks have loaded with dust, so the fans run faster to hold the same temperatures, so the machine is louder doing the same work.
That is the aerodynamic path, and it means the first fix is cleaning rather than buying.
The other path is that nothing changed thermally and a mechanical coupling appeared: a drive that worked loose, a panel not reseated after an upgrade, a fan whose bearing developed a rattle. This one is usually constant rather than load-dependent, which is the tell.
Why buying quiet fans first disappoints
It is the obvious move and it fails often enough to be worth warning about. Quiet fans address exactly one of the causes above. Fitted to a machine whose noise is a resonating side panel or a rattling drive cage, they change nothing audible and cost a Saturday.
There is also a subtler trap in how quiet fans are sold. A fan advertised at a low noise figure is frequently quiet because it moves less air. Swap several of those into a case that needed the airflow, and either temperatures rise or the curve pushes them faster and the noise returns.
What actually matters
Which category the noise is in. The panel-off test settles it in ten seconds: noise that drops sharply with the side panel removed is the case resonating. Noise unchanged or louder is coming from the fans themselves.
Whether the heatsinks are clean. A machine running its fans hard to compensate for blocked fins is loud for a reason that no fan purchase addresses. Clean first, then listen again.
Where the case is standing. A tower in the corner between two walls reflects its own output back into the room, and a case standing on a hard resonant surface couples vibration into it. Both are free to change and frequently more audible than a component swap.
Airflow at a stated noise level, not noise alone. The useful figure is how much air a fan moves for a given loudness. Noise figures in isolation describe a slow fan.
The options, and who each suits
Cleaning and repositioning suits everybody and costs nothing. It is genuinely the first move, and for a fair share of machines it is the only one needed. Cleaning a gaming PC covers doing it without damage.
Decoupling the drives suits any machine with a mechanical hard drive, which is where a large share of "my PC rattles" actually originates. It is the cheapest fix on this page by a wide margin — hard drive rattle covers it.

Better fans suit a machine whose noise is genuinely aerodynamic and whose existing fans are the cheap ones the case shipped with. Buy on airflow at a stated noise level, and change the fan curve before changing the fans — a curve set to ramp aggressively makes good fans sound bad.

Dampening material suits a case that resonates — the panel-off test dropping the noise sharply. It does nothing for aerodynamic noise, and it has a thermal cost worth understanding before buying, which sound-dampening a PC case goes into.

The mistake to avoid
Treating noise as one problem with one solution. The reason people buy fans twice is that they skipped the diagnosis, fixed the wrong category, and concluded the fans they bought were not quiet enough.
The second mistake is chasing silence past the point where it costs thermal headroom. Every dampening measure and every slower fan trades air for quiet, and a machine that throttles is a machine whose fans will eventually be running flat out anyway. The target is not intrusive, not silent — and the free measures get most of the way there.
