Noise and heat are different symptoms with different causes. One of these fixes a cooler working too hard; the other fixes a cooler that has worn out.

Does the noise track temperature? If it rises under load and settles at idle, the cooler is working too hard and paste is a candidate. If it is there whenever the fan turns, something is worn and paste will change nothing.

That one question separates these two jobs, and both start with the same risky step — taking the cooler off.

The short version

Repasting. Cheap in parts, moderate in risk, and it addresses one specific cause: degraded thermal transfer making the fan work harder than it should. It does nothing for a worn fan.

Replacing the cooler. More expensive, bounded by clearances you must measure, and it addresses worn mechanical parts and inadequate capacity at once. It also includes a repaste, because it has to.

The diagnostic is idle versus load

Fan noise that rises with temperature is the cooling system doing its job, possibly harder than it should. That points at transfer — dust first, paste second.

Mechanical noise does not care about temperature. A failing bearing rattles, ticks or grinds at any speed, and it is usually audible at idle when everything else has gone quiet. No amount of paste changes it.

Paste degrades over years, not seasons

This matters because it rules out a lot of cases quickly.

Modern pastes last a long time. A machine that has become noticeably louder over one summer has almost certainly loaded its fin stack with dust rather than dried out its interface — and the fix for that is free.

The third option both of these hide

If the heatsink is fine and the fan is worn, you can usually replace just the fan.

Most tower coolers hold their fans on removable clips in standard sizes, so a worn bearing on a good heatsink is a single cheap part rather than a reason to buy a whole assembly. Bearing type is what determines how a fan ages, and which types get noisy is covered in fan bearings, and which ones get noisy.

This is the correct answer more often than either headline option, and it is the one that gets skipped.

If you are replacing, measure first

A cooler is bounded by case height clearance and RAM clearance, and both are hard limits that cannot be worked around once the box arrives.

The mistake to avoid

Repasting a machine that has never been cleaned. If you clean and repaste in one session and temperatures improve, you have learned nothing about which one did it — and the odds strongly favour the cleaning. Clean, measure, then decide about paste.

The second mistake is replacing a whole cooler because of a fan. The heatsink does not wear out; the bearing does, and it is a standard part held on with clips. Establishing which component is actually noisy takes a minute with the panel off and can turn a moderate purchase into a very small one.

Questions people actually ask

How do I tell which problem I have?
By whether the noise tracks temperature. A cooler working harder than it should is quiet at idle and loud under load, because the fan is responding to heat it cannot shed. A worn bearing is audible whenever the fan turns, including at idle, and the sound has a mechanical character — rattle, tick or grinding — rather than simply being more air.
Does old paste actually make a machine louder?
Indirectly, and only when it has genuinely degraded. Poor heat transfer raises core temperatures, the fan curve responds by spinning faster, and the machine is louder doing the same work. But paste degrades over years, so a machine that became loud in a single season is far more likely to be dusty than dry.
Is it worth repasting while replacing the cooler?
It is not optional — a new cooler needs fresh paste regardless, and most include some. The question is only whether repasting alone would have been enough, which is what this comparison is about.
Can I replace just the fan?
