They differ in what happens when you rearrange, not in how they look on day one. Pegboard fixes positions to a grid, slatwall slides anywhere along a row, and a French cleat lets a holder you made lift off and rehang anywhere on the rail.

Decide what is going on the wall before choosing any of them. All three reward that and none of them rescues its absence.

The short version

Pegboard. Holes in a board, hooks in the holes. Cheapest to start, most available, and the hooks lift out with the tool unless they lock.

The hook-lifting problem defines pegboard

It is the complaint everyone has and it is structural: a plain hook sits in a hole held by gravity and friction, so lifting the tool lifts the hook.

The fix is hooks that lock or clip into the board rather than pressing harder, and that is precisely what the better pegboard systems sell. Judge pegboard on its hook mechanism, not on the board.

Slatwall buys continuous positioning

The channels run the full width, so a holder goes exactly where you want it rather than to the nearest hole. Over a wall being rearranged repeatedly that is a genuine, daily difference.

The trade is lock-in. Accessories are usually designed for a specific system, so the panel and its hooks are effectively one purchase — and switching later means replacing both.

French cleat is the one nobody mentions

Two strips of plywood cut at an angle: one on the wall, one on the back of whatever you are hanging. The holder drops on and locks by geometry.

It is the cheapest in materials and the most flexible in use — every holder can be exactly the shape of the thing it holds, which no bought accessory manages. And because the load transfers down through a continuous rail, it takes the most weight of the three.

The honest cost is time. You are making every holder, and that is either the appeal or the objection.

The fixing decides more than the format

All three are limited by the same thing: how well the system is attached to the wall behind it.

A cleat rail into studs or masonry outperforms slatwall into plasterboard, and vice versa. Choose the format on how you work; get the fixing right regardless, because that is what actually fails.

Mixing is usually the right answer

Nothing about these is exclusive, and the best walls in practice are not one system.

A cleat rail takes the heavy and awkward holders. A pegboard or slatwall section takes hand tools. And a magnetic strip takes the handful of things reached for every single session, where any hook is an extra step.

The mistake to avoid

Fitting a system before deciding what goes on it. All three are cheap to install and tedious to redo, and the differences between them only show up during rearrangement — so committing before you know your layout guarantees you meet those differences the hard way.

The second mistake is buying pegboard on price and generic hooks with it. The falling-hook problem is the one thing that makes people abandon a wall, it is entirely a hook-mechanism issue, and the saving on hooks is what causes it.
