Both live in the same drawer, both get called "work gloves" informally, and each one is built by deliberately giving up the property that makes the other useful.

The short answer

Disposable nitrile resists petroleum products and solvents and offers close to nothing against a sharp edge, an impact, or cold. Reusable work gloves protect against cuts, pinches, impacts and cold and offer close to nothing against fluids — the same absorbent construction that makes them comfortable and grippy is what lets oil soak straight through to skin.

Why the same job sometimes needs both

Some garage work sits in the gap between the two — handling a cold, sharp-edged part that also happens to be oily, for instance. Neither glove alone covers that combination well. Wearing a thin nitrile glove underneath a work glove is a reasonable, commonly used answer: the nitrile handles what fluid contact there is, the outer glove handles the cut and cold risk, at the cost of some dexterity from the extra layer.

What to actually check before buying either

Nitrile: thickness, in mils. This is the spec that decides whether a glove survives the job, and it is the one most boxes bury. Thin examination-grade gloves around 4 mil are made for dexterity and tear on anything with an edge. The 6 to 8 mil range is the automotive one — thick enough to survive pulling a filter or handling a bracket, thin enough to still feel a fastener start. Above that you are buying chemical-handling gloves and losing the dexterity that made nitrile worth wearing.

Work gloves: the cut rating, not the marketing. Cut resistance is a graded, testable property — ANSI A1 through A9 in the US, EN 388 in Europe — and it is printed on the glove or the packaging. A glove sold on the strength of the word "heavy-duty" with no rating printed anywhere has not been tested to any standard. For general garage work a mid-range cut level is ample; the high levels exist for glass and sheet-metal handling.

Both: size, and it matters in opposite directions. Nitrile that is too small tears at the fingertips and at the web of the thumb, which is exactly where fluid then reaches you. Work gloves that are too large are the more serious mistake — loose fabric near anything rotating is a genuine entanglement hazard, and it is the reason to avoid gloves entirely around a running engine, a bench grinder or a drill press rather than to buy a better pair.

Cost behaves differently, which is the part people get wrong. Both sit at the budget end as a single purchase. Nitrile is a consumable, so its real cost is per-job and recurs forever; a decent pair of work gloves is a one-off that lasts years. The common error is buying a large box of the cheapest thin nitrile, tearing two gloves per job, and spending more over a year than a mid-range box would have cost.

Who should pick which

Reach for nitrile for anything touching oil, coolant, brake fluid or solvent. Reach for work gloves for handling sharp trim, cold metal, or anything where an impact or a pinch is the real risk rather than fluid contact. For a job that genuinely has both risks at once, double-gloving is the practical answer rather than expecting one product to do both jobs.

Questions people actually ask

Can reusable work gloves handle an oil change?
Not well. They have no meaningful resistance to petroleum products, so oil soaks in and stays against the skin — the fabric or synthetic-leather construction that gives them grip and abrasion resistance is exactly what makes them absorbent rather than fluid-proof.
Can nitrile gloves protect against a sharp edge or an impact?
Barely. Disposable nitrile is thin by design, for dexterity and fluid resistance, not for protecting against a blade edge, a pinch point, or a dropped tool. A work glove's reinforced palm and cuff are doing a genuinely different job.
Is there a glove that does both?
Not really as one product without a real trade-off. The properties that make nitrile fluid-resistant (thin, non-porous) are close to opposite the properties that make a work glove protective (thicker, textured, absorbent). Double-gloving — a work glove over thin nitrile — is the practical answer for a job that genuinely needs both.
Why do work gloves feel warmer and grippier than nitrile?
The fabric or synthetic-leather construction that traps warmth and provides texture for grip is the same construction that makes the glove absorbent rather than fluid-resistant — the comfort and the fluid vulnerability come from the same material choice, not two separate ones.
