Descaling a Kettle and a Shower Head
Limescale is a chemistry problem, not a scrubbing problem. Which acid to use where, how long it actually needs, and what scraping it off costs you.

Limescale is dissolved, not scrubbed. It is a hard mineral deposit sitting on softer surfaces, so abrasion takes off some scale and some of the surface — and the roughened surface then collects the next deposit faster.
Use an acid, give it far more time than feels necessary, and repeat rather than reaching for something harder.

The problem, as it appears
A kettle with a white crust in the bottom and flakes in the tea. A shower head where half the holes have stopped and the rest spray sideways. Taps with a chalky ring that comes back within a week of being cleaned.
In a hard water area all three are inevitable, and all three are treated as cleaning problems when they are chemistry problems.
Why the obvious fix disappoints
The obvious fix is to scrub, and it fails in a specific and self-worsening way.
Scale is harder than chrome plating, harder than the plastic of a kettle, and harder than the lacquer on a tap. Scouring removes deposit and surface, and a microscopically rougher surface has more sites for the next deposit to key into.
So the second descale is harder than the first, and the fifth is worse again. The tap that has been scrubbed for years is the one where scale reappears within days.
The other common failure is impatience. Dissolving a mineral deposit takes time, and a ten-minute soak on a thick deposit removes the outer layer and leaves the rest — which reads as "the product did not work".

What actually matters
1. Contact time, above everything
More important than concentration. A weak solution overnight beats a strong one for ten minutes, because the acid is consumed at the surface and needs time to work inward.
For a badly scaled shower head, one overnight soak beats six quick ones — a partly descaled head keeps scale in its internal channels, and that residue seeds the next deposit.
2. Whether the acid stays where you put it
On a horizontal surface or inside a kettle, any liquid works. On tiles, taps and glass, a liquid runs off in seconds and the dwell time is effectively zero.
That is the entire reason gels exist, and it is why people conclude that descaler works in a kettle and not in a bathroom.
3. What the surface tolerates
Check the manual for kettles and coffee machines. Some specify a particular descaler or concentration, and some seals and plastics do not tolerate a long soak in strong acid.
Natural stone is the important exception — acid etches marble and limestone permanently. Nothing on this page goes near either.

Kettles, shower heads, coffee machines, tap aerators. It does what vinegar does without leaving a smell in something that will later hold drinking water.

For anything that holds water and will later hold something you drink. Warm the solution — the reaction is meaningfully faster warm than cold.

A clinging gel, for vertical surfaces
Tiles, glass, taps, the shower tray. The gel exists to solve dwell time, which is the only variable that matters on a vertical surface.

A cloth that does not scratch
For lifting softened deposit without abrading what is underneath. After the acid has worked, the scale should wipe rather than need force.

After the acid, not instead of it. If it still needs force, the dwell time was too short — go again rather than pressing harder.

The mistake to avoid
Treating it as a cleaning job rather than a maintenance one. Every descale is a chance to damage the surface slightly, and every damaged surface scales faster.
The change that actually reduces the frequency is removing the water before it evaporates. Scale forms when hard water dries in place and leaves its minerals behind — so a squeegee on the glass after a shower and a shake of the head after use prevents more scale than any product removes.
