The problem, as it appears

Bass that sounds boomy and imprecise, a desk you can feel through your forearms, and objects that buzz at particular notes. Frequently the monitor wobbles slightly during loud passages.

None of that is the speaker being poor. It is the speaker doing its job into a large flat surface that was never intended to be a diaphragm and is now behaving as one.

Why moving the speakers disappoints

Sliding them further apart or closer to the wall changes the stereo image and the room interaction, and leaves the coupling exactly as it was. The speaker cabinet is still resting on the desk, still passing vibration into it.

The other common move — turning the bass down — reduces the symptom by reducing the signal. It works, in the sense that a quieter problem is smaller, and it costs the low end you presumably wanted.

What actually matters

That the cabinet is decoupled from the desk. This is the mechanism, and everything else is secondary.

That the speaker is still stable. Decoupling is not the same as letting it wobble. A cabinet rocking on something too soft moves relative to the room, which smears imaging in a different way. Dense foam holds position while absorbing; a folded towel frequently does not.

Tweeter height and angle. Most isolation pads are wedges as well as absorbers, and the tilt matters. Tweeters want to be near ear height and pointed at the listening position, and desk speakers are almost always below that firing past your chest.

How much low end there is to transmit. A small pair of desktop speakers puts far less energy into a desk than a set with real bass extension. The severity of this problem scales with how much bass the speakers actually produce.

Wall or stand mounting suits someone willing to get the speakers off the desk entirely. It is the complete version of this fix and it costs more in both money and commitment.

The mistake to avoid

Putting speakers on something soft and springy. It decouples enthusiastically and lets the cabinet move, and a speaker that recoils against its own output is producing a less defined image than one bolted down. The target is a dense material that absorbs vibration while holding position — which is why purpose-made pads are firmer than people expect when they arrive.
