Bass travels through the building, not through the air, which is why turning it down helps less than expected. What decoupling changes and what it cannot.

The problem, as it appears

The system sounds good. Nobody has complained about music, dialogue or games in general — they have complained about the bass, which arrives downstairs as a formless thump with no other content attached.

Turning it down helps a little and ruins the listening, which feels like the wrong trade because it is.

Why the volume control disappoints

Because it is acting on the wrong variable.

Two paths carry sound out of a room. Airborne transmission goes through the air and through gaps, and building materials absorb it reasonably well — increasingly so as frequency rises. Structure-borne transmission goes into the floor and travels through the building itself, and low frequencies do this extremely efficiently.

A subwoofer sitting directly on a floor is coupled to the structure. It is not merely making a sound in a room; it is putting mechanical energy into the building. Reducing volume reduces how much, and does not change the fact that the connection exists.

That is why the neighbours hear only the low end: everything above it was absorbed on the way, and what got through took a different route entirely.

What actually matters

Decoupling changes the path

Putting a compliant layer between the cabinet and the floor reduces how much vibration crosses into the structure. That is the single most effective thing available short of not using it.

It is worth being precise about what this buys, because the category is routinely oversold: it reduces structure-borne transmission. It does nothing about airborne bass, and it is not soundproofing.

The lowest octave is the antisocial one

Frequency matters as much as level. The very lowest content travels furthest through a building and is the hardest to contain — and it is also the part contributing least to most listening.

So a smaller subwoofer, or the same one crossed over a little higher, gives up the octave that causes the problem while keeping the part that makes music sound whole. That is a genuinely good trade in a flat and it is rarely presented as one, because the category sells depth.

Placement changes what you hear and what they hear

Room modes mean the same subwoofer sounds boomy in one position and even in another, and moving it costs nothing. It is always worth doing before buying treatment.

For transmission specifically, corners are the worst position: they load the room most effectively, which is exactly what you do not want when the room is part of somebody else's ceiling.

Panels do not address this

Time of day is a real control

Unglamorous and effective. Structure-borne bass is tolerable at four in the afternoon and intolerable at midnight, and the same energy is involved in both.

Splitting the day — speakers when the building is awake, headphones when it is not — solves the problem completely rather than reducing it, and it is cheaper than the partial fixes.

The mistake to avoid

Buying isolation and expecting soundproofing. A platform reduces the structural path and leaves the airborne one untouched, so the result is an improvement rather than a solution. Someone expecting silence downstairs will conclude the product does not work, when in fact it did the only job it claimed.

The second mistake is chasing the lowest octave in a flat at all. The specification that sells subwoofers is how deep they go, and depth is precisely the content that passes through concrete and timber into somebody else's room. In this one environment, less extension is a feature.

Questions people actually ask

Why do the neighbours hear the bass and not the rest?
Because low frequencies pass through building structure far more readily than high ones. Walls and floors absorb treble effectively and are close to transparent to bass, so what reaches the next flat is the low end with everything else stripped away — which is also why it sounds like a thump rather than like music.
Does turning it down help?
Less than you would expect, because the path is structural rather than airborne. Reducing volume reduces the energy going in, so it helps somewhat, but a cabinet coupled to a floor is still driving the building directly.
