Do You Need a Pop Filter for a Gaming Mic?
Plosives are a blast of air hitting the capsule, not a loud sound. That is why a filter works and why moving off-axis works just as well for free.

A pop filter fixes one specific thing: a blast of air hitting the diaphragm on plosive consonants. It is genuinely effective and it is not the only answer — speaking slightly across the microphone rather than straight into it does much the same job for nothing.

The problem, as it appears
Certain words produce a thump that swamps everything for a fraction of a second — anything starting with a hard p or b. On a call it is a distraction; on a recording it is the thing that makes otherwise acceptable audio sound amateurish.
It is not a volume problem. The same word said at the same loudness from a different angle does not do it, which is the clue to what is actually happening.
Why turning the gain down disappoints
Because plosives are not loud sound, they are moving air. Saying "p" projects a small puff forward, and at close range that puff physically pushes the diaphragm well beyond what the acoustic level would suggest.
Reducing gain lowers everything including your voice, and the pop still overloads at the capsule before the gain stage ever sees it. The fix has to happen in front of the microphone, not in the settings.
What actually matters
Whether anything interrupts the airflow. That is the entire mechanism. Mesh, foam or distance — all three work by stopping the puff reaching the diaphragm as a coherent blast.
The angle you speak at. Positioning the capsule slightly off to one side of your mouth, so the air passes by rather than into it, is free and works well. It is the first thing to try.
Distance. The puff dissipates quickly. A microphone a hand's width away sees far less than one a few centimetres from your lips — though moving further away also picks up more room, which is a trade.
Mesh or foam. Mesh screens are more acoustically transparent and need a gooseneck. Foam covers fit directly over the capsule, are more convenient, and take a little top end out with them.
The options, and who each suits
Moving off-axis suits everyone and costs nothing. Try it before buying anything — for a lot of people it resolves the problem entirely, and it also reduces breath noise.
A mesh pop filter suits a desk microphone on an arm, where there is somewhere to clamp the gooseneck and where audio quality is the point. It is the more transparent option.

A foam windshield suits a headset boom or a mic that moves, where a gooseneck-mounted screen is impractical. Slightly less transparent and considerably more convenient.
A boom arm suits this indirectly but genuinely, because it makes positioning the microphone off-axis easy rather than fiddly. A mic on a fixed desk stand tends to end up pointing straight at your mouth because that is where it will sit.

Nothing suits anyone who does not pop. Plenty of people do not, depending on voice and mic placement, and buying a filter for a problem you do not have is a small pointless obstruction between you and the microphone.
The mistake to avoid
Buying a filter and continuing to speak straight into the capsule from very close range. A screen reduces the blast; at a few centimetres it may not reduce it enough. Combining the filter with a small angle change is what makes it reliable.
The second mistake is expecting it to help with room noise or keyboard sound.
