Garage Lighting for a Low Ceiling
Why one bright fixture makes a low garage worse, what colour temperature and CRI actually do for you, and how to light around a sectional door.

A low garage ceiling changes the lighting problem in a specific way: you cannot get the source far enough from the work to spread it, so a single bright fixture produces a small pool of glare surrounded by shadow, plus your own silhouette exactly where you are trying to see.
More lumens does not fix this. Distribution does.

The actual problem is shadow, not brightness
Any light directly above you is blocked by you. Bent over an engine bay in a garage with one central fixture, your head and shoulders shade the thing you are looking at, and the brighter the fixture the harsher the contrast at the edge of that shadow — which makes it harder to see, not easier.
Two consequences:
- Multiple modest sources beat one strong one. Light arriving from several directions fills the shadows that any single source creates.
- Position matters more than output. Fixtures running along the sides of the garage, above where you stand rather than above the car's centre line, put light onto the vertical surfaces you actually work on.
What the specifications mean
Lumens, not watts. Watts describe consumption; lumens describe light. For a single-car garage, plan on covering the whole ceiling area rather than hitting a single number in the middle.
Colour temperature (K). Neutral to cool reads as bright and crisp for task work. Very cool light is tiring over a long session. This is largely preference, within a sensible range.
CRI. How faithfully colours appear under the light. This is the specification most worth paying attention to and the one most often omitted — if a listing does not state it, assume it is not impressive.
Flicker. Cheap drivers produce visible or sub-visible flicker, which causes eye strain and can make rotating machinery appear stationary. That last point is a genuine safety issue in a workshop.
Putting numbers on the coverage argument
Typical 4ft linkable LED strips run about 20W and produce roughly 2200 lumens each. On its own that is unremarkable — one strip will not light a garage, and that is exactly the point.
Six of them, spread across the ceiling and down the walls, draw around 120W in total and produce even illumination with no strong shadow anywhere. Compare that with a single 100W-equivalent fixture in the middle of the ceiling, which produces a similar total output and a far worse result, because all of it arrives from one direction and you are standing in it.
The planning constraint is the chain limit: commonly eight fixtures in series from one supply. Ample for a single-car garage, and the point at which a double garage needs a second circuit rather than a longer daisy chain.

If installing several strips sounds tedious, a smaller number of higher-output sealed fixtures will suit you better, at the cost of light that is less even.
Working around a sectional door
The mechanism and tracks of a sectional or up-and-over door occupy the exact ceiling area you want to light, and anything mounted in the door's swept path will eventually be hit by it.
Practical approach:
- Map the swept path first, with the door part open as well as fully open. The half-open position catches people out.
- Run fixtures parallel to the tracks, outboard of them, rather than across the ceiling.
- Put light on the walls. In a narrow garage, a lit pale wall becomes a large soft source and fills shadows better than another ceiling fixture.
The light that matters most is the one you can move
Fixed lighting gets you general illumination. Nearly all real work happens in a specific place that fixed lighting cannot reach — under a wheel arch, inside a footwell, behind an engine.
A rechargeable handheld or magnetic work light does more for actual visibility than any ceiling upgrade, and is worth having before you improve the ceiling at all.

Order of work
- A movable work light, if you do not have a good one.
- Several modest ceiling fixtures, positioned for coverage rather than brightness.
- Light on the walls, if the garage is narrow.
- A dedicated bench light, if you have a bench.
