Warming and Ventilating a Garage Safely

Heating a garage and sealing it are the same instinct, and together they are the dangerous one — the fumes you make while working need somewhere to go.

The instinct in a cold garage is to close everything and turn on a heater. The instinct while using solvents is to open the door. In winter these two instincts fight, and the way that argument usually resolves is the unsafe one.

The problem, as it appears

A garage too cold to work in for four months of the year, and heating options that all carry a warning nobody reads properly.

The tension is real. The things that heat a space that size efficiently are mostly combustion, and combustion in a closed garage is the one mistake here with a serious outcome.

Why the two belong together

A warm sealed garage is pleasant to work in and is also a container. Everything the work produces stays: solvent vapour from cleaners and degreasers, fumes from paints and adhesives, and — if an engine turns over even briefly — exhaust gas.

None of that is a reason not to heat a garage. It is a reason to treat heating and ventilation as one decision rather than two, because the arrangement that makes a garage comfortable is the same arrangement that makes it hold whatever you put into the air.

Heating: electric avoids the main problem

An electric heater produces no combustion products. That single property is why it is the straightforward choice for a space you are standing in with the door shut.

Fuel-burning heaters — propane, kerosene, paraffin — consume oxygen from the room and put combustion products, including carbon monoxide, back into it. They carry ventilation requirements precisely because of this, and those requirements are in direct tension with the reason someone wanted a heater in January. Keep it away from the floor-level solvent layer. Many solvent vapours are heavier than air and pool low down, which is where a portable heater usually sits. Ventilation: exchange, not stirring

A fan pointed at you moves the same air around and makes the space feel better without changing what is in it. What actually helps is exchange — contaminated air leaving, fresh air arriving.

That needs two openings. A fan at a door or window pushing air out, with something open at the far end of the space letting air in, moves the whole volume. A fan alone in a sealed room does not.

What actually matters

Ventilate during and after. Vapour does not stop existing when you put the lid back on. Running the fan for a while after finishing is what clears what is already airborne.

Never run an engine in a closed garage, even briefly, even with a heater running and a window cracked. This is the one item on the page with no acceptable improvised version.

Watch the electrical load. A heater is one of the highest-draw things most people plug in. Sharing a circuit or an extension lead between a heater and power tools is how breakers trip mid-job at best.

The mistake to avoid

Treating warmth and airflow as a trade-off to be settled once. The correct arrangement changes with the job: sealed and warm is fine for sorting parts or reading, and is the wrong setting the moment an aerosol comes out. Deciding per job rather than per season is the whole habit.

While sorting out the space, how damp it actually is is worth measuring at the same time — heating a garage changes its humidity behaviour, and ventilation changes it again.
