How Damp Is Your Garage? Measure Before You Buy

A dehumidifier sized by guesswork either runs pointlessly or cannot keep up. A cheap hygrometer tells you whether the problem is humidity or ventilation.

The usual order of operations is to notice rust or a musty smell, buy a dehumidifier, and hope. That skips the step that tells you whether a dehumidifier is even the right purchase.

The problem, as it appears

Tools going rusty, a musty smell, condensation on the inside of the door in the morning — and no way to tell whether the garage is genuinely damp or simply cold.

Those are different problems with different fixes. Buying a dehumidifier for a garage that is actually suffering condensation on cold surfaces is treating the wrong one, and it will run continuously without changing much.

Two different problems that feel identical

Persistently damp air. The garage sits at high relative humidity most of the time, regardless of the hour. This is the problem a dehumidifier is built for.

Condensation from temperature swing. Humidity is unremarkable during the day, then the temperature drops overnight, the air can hold less moisture, and water forms on every surface colder than the dew point — including the car. Running a dehumidifier against this is fighting the symptom, when ventilation, insulation, or simply not putting a warm wet car into a cold sealed box addresses the cause.

From inside the garage these feel the same: things are wet, metal is rusting, there is a smell. A monitor logging temperature and humidity together separates them within a week.

What actually matters

Read the trend, not the number. One reading tells you almost nothing. A week of highs and lows tells you whether you have a humidity problem or a condensation problem, which is the entire point of doing this first.

Place it sensibly. Away from the door, out of direct sun, away from any heat source, roughly at the height of whatever you are trying to protect. A sensor sitting in a draught reports on the draught.

Aim for a range rather than a target. Somewhere around 40 to 60 percent relative humidity is the usual guidance for storing metal without drying out rubber and leather. Precision beyond that is not a decision you can act on.

What to do with the answer

If the reading is persistently high across the whole space, a desiccant or a dehumidifier is the correct response — sized to the volume, and honest about scale.

If the reading swings overnight, the answer is airflow and keeping cold wet things out of a sealed space — which is also why a non-breathable car cover makes matters worse rather than better.

If the humidity is high in one spot only, you probably do not have a humidity problem at all. You have water getting in, and finding that before it ruins things is a different job.

The mistake to avoid

Buying the appliance and treating the purchase as the solution. A dehumidifier in an unventilated, uninsulated garage with a cold slab will run continuously, cost money, and still lose to the overnight temperature swing — because it was never the right tool for that particular version of the problem.

Questions people actually ask

What humidity level should a garage actually sit at?
Broadly, keeping relative humidity somewhere in the 40 to 60 percent range is the usual target for storing metal and avoiding mould. Below that is fine for steel but can dry out rubber and leather over long periods; consistently above about 60 is where corrosion and mildew become genuinely likely rather than merely possible.
Why measure before buying a dehumidifier?
Because the reading tells you which problem you have. Persistently high humidity across the whole space is a dehumidifier's job. Humidity that spikes overnight and falls in the day is usually condensation driven by temperature swings, which ventilation and insulation address better. Buying the appliance first means finding this out afterwards.
Where should the monitor go?
Not next to the door and not in direct sun. A spot roughly at the height of the things you care about, away from draughts and away from any heat source, gives a reading representative of the space rather than of the microclimate around the sensor.
Is condensation the same as high humidity?
Related but not identical, and the difference matters. Condensation happens when a surface is colder than the dew point of the air touching it, so a cold car in a humid garage grows water on its panels even if the room's overall humidity is not extreme. That is why a monitor reading both temperature and humidity is more useful than one reading humidity alone.
Do the cheap ones read accurately enough?
For this purpose, generally yes. You are looking for a range and a trend — is it sitting at 75 percent all winter, does it spike overnight — rather than laboratory precision. An error of a few percent does not change any decision you would make from the reading.
