Lighting for Video Calls

The camera exposes for the whole frame, so a window behind you makes a silhouette. Direction and softness matter far more than buying a brighter light.

Move the window in front of you before buying anything. A camera sets one exposure for the whole frame, so a bright background makes you the dark part — and no light you add fixes that as cheaply as turning round does.

After that, the useful variables are direction and softness. Brightness is the one people buy and the one that matters least.

The problem, as it appears

You look dim, slightly grey, and a bit noisy. Or you are a dark shape against a bright window while everyone else looks normal.

The room looks perfectly well lit to you, which makes the whole thing feel like a camera fault.

Why buying a light first disappoints

Because the room is well lit, and that is not the measurement the camera is making.

Your eyes adapt locally and handle an enormous range of brightness across one scene. A small camera sensor does not. It picks one exposure for the entire frame, and if a large bright area is in that frame — a window, a white wall catching sun — the exposure gets set for that, and your face falls below it.

Adding a light to the front then fights the window rather than replacing it, so the modest lamp people buy loses. Removing the bright background instead, by turning the desk or closing the blind, costs nothing and settles it immediately.

There is a second, quieter effect. In dim conditions a camera raises its gain, which adds noise, and then removes that noise with processing that also removes fine detail. That is why an underlit picture looks soft rather than just dark — and why more light improves sharpness without the camera changing at all.

What actually matters

Direction, and it is not straight on

Above eye level, off to one side, angled down at you. That is roughly how daylight arrives indoors and it is what faces are expected to look like.

The alternatives each have a signature. Straight-on is flat and washes out the shape of a face. From below is the angle used deliberately to unsettle people. Directly overhead — a ceiling light on its own — drops the eyes into shadow, which reads as tired regardless of how you feel.

One source, placed properly, beats several placed casually.

Softness comes from size, not from spending

The characteristic that separates flattering light from unflattering light is how large the source is relative to your face.

A large source wraps around and fills its own shadows, so edges are gradual and skin looks even. A small source, however bright, throws hard-edged shadows and picks out texture and shine.

That is why a compact panel held close is harsh, and why the two cheapest improvements available are bouncing a lamp off a white wall or ceiling, and diffusing whatever you have. A wall turns a small source into a wall-sized one for nothing.

Mount it above eye level and off to one side rather than straight on, and diffuse it — a small panel close up is hard light at any price.

The screen is already a light source

Free, and mostly overlooked. A bright screen is a large panel directly in front of your face, which is the geometry a key light is trying to buy.

It has a real drawback: its colour and brightness change with whatever is on it, so you shift as windows change. Useful as fill, unreliable as the main source.

Two colours of light is worse than not enough

A common and genuinely odd-looking failure: daylight from a window on one side, a warm bulb on the other.

The camera chooses a single white balance, so it can correct one of them. The other stays visibly wrong, and the result is a face that is orange down one side and blue down the other — which people notice without being able to say why.

Matching them approximately fixes it. Which temperature you land on matters much less than the two agreeing.

Useful mainly for bouncing off a ceiling or wall for a large soft source, and for matching its colour to the daylight in the room.

A light bar is not a key light

Worth stating because it is the most common wrong purchase in this category.

A monitor light bar is engineered to throw light downward onto the desk and to keep it off the screen and out of your eyes. Doing that job well means almost none of it reaches your face.

It is a good desk lamp. It is not a face light, and buying one for calls is a disappointment built into the design.

The camera position is half of the result

Lighting cannot compensate for a camera below your chin looking up, and a lot of what people read as a lighting problem is an angle problem.

Camera at roughly eye level, lens a little above rather than below — that plus one well-placed source is most of the way to a good picture. The rest of that argument, including the privacy side, is in webcam placement and privacy.

What is behind you competes for the exposure

Anything bright back there is taking exposure away from your face, which is the same mechanism as the window in a smaller form.

A plain, mid-toned background is the easy answer, and it also removes the need for the software blurring that produces the wobbling-ear effect. Doing that in a room you also live in is covered in streaming backdrop without a spare room.

The order to work in

  1. Deal with the window. Turn round, or close the blind.
  2. Raise the camera to about eye level.
  3. One source, above eye level, off to one side.
  4. Make it soft — bounce it off a wall, or diffuse it.
  5. Match the colours of whatever else is lighting the room.
  6. Then add brightness if the picture is still noisy.

The mistake to avoid

Buying a light while sitting in front of a window. The camera is exposing for the brightest thing in frame, so a modest lamp on your face is competing with the sky and losing. Every pound spent there is spent on the wrong side of the problem, and turning the desk round — or closing a blind — makes the purchase unnecessary about half the time.

The second mistake is treating brightness as the specification that matters. Two lights of the same output can look entirely different depending on how large they are and where they sit, and the adjustments that change how you look most — higher, to one side, bounced off a wall — are all free once you own any light at all. That is the same reasoning that applies to glare on the screen, from the other direction, in reducing monitor glare in a bright room.

Questions people actually ask

Why am I a silhouette when the room looks fine?
Because the camera sets one exposure for the whole frame, and a window behind you is far brighter than your face. It exposes for the bright part, and everything darker — you — goes black. Your eyes handle that range effortlessly and a small sensor does not, which is why the room looks normal and the call does not.
What is the free fix?
Turning round. Putting the window in front of you rather than behind makes it your key light, and daylight through a window is a large soft source of the kind that costs money to buy. If turning the desk is impossible, closing the blind removes the problem even though it makes the room darker.
Does more light make the picture sharper?
Indirectly, and it is the reason low light looks soft rather than merely dark. A camera in dim conditions raises its gain, which adds noise, and then applies noise reduction, which smears fine detail. More light lets it drop the gain, so the image gets cleaner and more detailed as well as brighter.
Why does a ring light look harsh?
Because softness comes from the size of the source relative to you, and a small bright panel close to your face is a hard source however much you spend on it. Hard light means sharp-edged shadows and shiny highlights on skin. Diffusing it, or bouncing it off a wall, changes the character more than changing the light does.
Where should the light actually be?
Above eye level and off to one side, angled down toward you. That is close to how daylight arrives and it puts shadows where people expect them. Straight-on is flat and slightly interrogative; from below is the horror-film angle; directly overhead drops shadows into the eye sockets.
Does a monitor light bar help on calls?
Barely, and it is bought for this constantly. A light bar is designed to throw light downward onto the desk and to keep it out of your eyes and off the screen — which means very little of it reaches your face. It is a good desk lamp and it is not a key light.
