If the desk still has room, a clamp lamp gives more light for less money. A light bar is worth it when desk surface is the scarce resource and a reflection on the panel is unacceptable — that is a narrow case, and it is the one the product is genuinely good at.

Where the money actually goes

The light bar is buying an absence. No footprint on the desk and no reflection on the panel. The optics are genuinely asymmetric — light thrown forward and down with a hard cutoff above — and that design is most of what separates a real bar from an LED strip on a bracket. It is not buying much light, and per unit of illumination it is expensive.

The lamp is buying light and articulation, which is what lamps have always been good at. The cost is that placement is now your problem: a lamp in the wrong position puts a bright reflection directly onto the screen, recreating the fault the bar avoids by construction.

Where the cheaper option is genuinely enough

  • Any desk with a clampable edge. More light, more adjustment, less money.
  • Close work — soldering, reading, anything needing light brought right up to the subject.
  • A monitor on a marginal arm, where nothing should be added to the bezel.
  • Wanting one light rather than desk-only equipment.

Where the cheaper option falls short

  • A genuinely full desk with no clampable edge and no surface to give up.
  • Placement constraints — a small desk against a wall sometimes has no lamp position that avoids reflecting on the panel.
  • Multi-monitor setups, where a lamp beside one screen tends to reflect in another.

The decision, plainly

  • Crowded desk, reflections unavoidable from any lamp position → light bar.
  • Clampable desk edge → clamp lamp, on cost and output.
  • Dark room generally, not just the desk → floor lamp bounced off a wall.

Questions people actually ask

Does a monitor light bar cause screen glare?
Designed properly, no — the optics throw light forward and down onto the desk with a sharp cutoff above, so nothing lands on the panel. That asymmetric distribution is the main thing separating a real light bar from a strip on a bracket.
Will a light bar overload a monitor arm?
Rarely on its own, but it adds weight at the top of the panel where leverage is greatest. On an arm already near the top of its spring range, it can be enough to make the monitor drift downward.
Is a light bar worth it over a normal lamp?
Only when desk space is genuinely the constraint. For pure light per pound a clamp lamp wins comfortably; the bar is paying for occupying no surface and never reflecting on the screen.
What is a red light lamp for at a desk?
Late-night use where you want minimal disruption to how the eyes are dark-adapted. It is a preference rather than a general-purpose light, and it is not useful for reading or detailed work.
