Playing a Handheld in Bed
The weight is the problem, not the screen. What makes an hour in bed actually comfortable, and why the blue-light worry is aimed at the wrong variable.

The complaint is almost never the screen. It is the arms. A handheld that is unremarkable at a desk becomes tiring within twenty minutes in bed, because your shoulders are holding it unsupported rather than your forearms resting on something.
Fix the support and the session becomes comfortable. Everything else on this page — heat, light, the person next to you — is secondary, and one popular worry is aimed at the wrong variable entirely.

The problem, as it appears
You sit up against the headboard, play for half an hour, and your shoulders ache. So you lie on your side, which is worse for your neck and puts the whole weight on one arm. So you rest it on your chest, which points the screen at the ceiling.
Somewhere in the rotation the device also gets hot, the fan gets loud, and the frame rate drops — which you attribute to the game.
Why "get a lighter handheld" disappoints
Because unsupported weight is not really about the number.
Held out in front of you with no forearm support, the load is on the shoulders continuously and statically. Static load is what fatigues, and it fatigues at a level far below what feels heavy when you first pick something up. A device a couple of hundred grams lighter buys you a few more minutes of the same problem.
The desk version of this is solved by the desk. In bed there is nothing to rest on, so the only real answers are to support the arms or to support the device.
What actually matters
Support the device, not your arms
The change that makes the biggest difference to a long session, and the one people dismiss as excessive until they try it.
An arm that clamps to the bed frame or a bedside table holds the screen where you want it, at the angle you want, indefinitely. Your hands only hold the controls — and on a handheld that means the weight is still on you, which is why the version that works best is a mount for the device with your hands resting rather than gripping.

Worth being honest about when this is over-solving: for twenty-minute sessions it is unnecessary. For an hour several nights a week it is the difference between the position being sustainable and not.
Failing that, support your arms
Free, and it does most of the job.
A pillow under each elbow converts a static shoulder load into a supported one. It looks silly and it works, and it is worth trying before spending anything, because if it solves the problem there is nothing to buy.
The seated-upright position with elbows supported is the one that lasts. Side-lying is the one people default to and the one that produces the neck complaint.
A grip changes the hold more than the weight
Adding mass to make something more comfortable is counter-intuitive and frequently correct.
A grip case moves the contact from your fingertips to your palms and gives the hand a shape to rest against rather than pinch. That is a different kind of tiredness from carrying weight, and it is the one that shows up as hand cramp rather than shoulder ache.

Soft surfaces are why it gets hot
The most common cause of a handheld running badly in bed, and it is misread as the game being demanding.
Intake vents against a duvet, a pillow or a chest cannot draw air. The device heats, throttles and gets loud — the same mechanism as a warm room, arriving faster because the airflow is blocked rather than merely warm.

Lowering the power limit helps here for the same reason it helps in a warm room, and it makes the fan quieter at the same time — which matters more in a bedroom than anywhere else. The full argument is in handheld throttling in a hot room.
Brightness is the variable, not colour temperature
Worth stating plainly, because the popular advice points elsewhere.
The evidence that blue-light filters meaningfully improve sleep is considerably weaker than their marketing suggests. Two things are better supported: how bright the screen is, and how late you stop. A dim screen at a reasonable hour does more than a colour filter on a bright screen at two in the morning.
Lowering brightness also happens to solve three other things at once — it stops the screen lighting the room and waking whoever is next to you, it reduces power draw and therefore heat, and it is the main mitigation for burn-in on an OLED panel during exactly the long, static sessions bed encourages. Use a filter if you prefer how it looks. Do not use it instead of turning the brightness down.
Light the room dimly rather than not at all
A bright screen in a black room is the highest-contrast situation your eyes can be in, and it is genuinely uncomfortable over an hour.
A small amount of low, warm light near the bed reduces that contrast without lighting the room, and it is a better lever than anything applied to the screen itself.

The order to work in
- Sit up, elbows supported on pillows. Free, and often sufficient.
- Check nothing is covering the vents — duvet, pillow, chest.
- Turn the brightness down. It solves comfort, sleep, heat and burn-in at once.
- Cap the frame rate and lower the power limit so the fan stays quiet.
- Add a grip if the complaint is hands rather than shoulders.
- Add a mount if sessions are long and regular, and only then.
- Add a dim bedside light if the contrast is the remaining problem.
The mistake to avoid
Buying a lighter device to fix an unsupported-arm problem. The fatigue comes from holding a static load with nothing to rest on, and that is a support problem at any weight — a few hundred grams less buys a few more minutes before the same ache arrives. The money is better spent on something that takes the weight, or on nothing at all if two pillows do it.
The second mistake is treating the blue-light filter as the sleep intervention. It is the most visible and most marketed option, it is the least well-supported, and turning it on tends to end the enquiry — so the screen stays bright and the session stays late, which are the two variables that actually had evidence behind them.
