Protecting a Car From Its Own Garage
Most garage damage is not the walls. It is a shelf corner, a bike pedal and a bin, all at exactly the height of a door and a wing.

The wall is not the problem. In a tight garage the damage almost never comes from the flat painted surface everyone worries about — it comes from a shelf bracket, a bike pedal, a bin lid and a door track, all sitting at exactly the height of the widest part of the car.
Those are harder than the wall, sharper than the wall, and several of them move.

The problem, as it appears
A scratch along a rear wing that nobody can account for. A chip on a door edge. A scuff on a bumper corner. Each one arrives without an incident, because each one is the result of somebody squeezing past in the dark carrying something.
The reason it keeps happening is that the hazards are invisible from the driving seat and only exist when the car is parked — which is the one time nobody is looking at them.
Why padding the wall disappoints
Because it solves the case people imagine rather than the case that occurs. A door swinging into a flat rendered wall is a real risk and it is covered separately in stopping car doors hitting garage walls.
But a flat wall distributes the impact across the whole door edge. A steel shelf bracket concentrates it into a point, and that is the difference between a mark and a gouge. Pad the wall and leave the bracket, and the expensive damage is still available.
What actually matters
Finding the hazards is the whole job
This takes five minutes and needs nothing. Park the car where it actually lives, open both doors fully, and walk the perimeter looking at one height band — roughly the widest part of the car, which is door handle to wing.
Everything within reach at that height goes on the list. The usual findings:
- Shelf brackets, which are steel, square-edged and at exactly the wrong height
- Bike pedals and bar ends, which are hard, sharp and move every time a bike does
- Bins, whose lids swing
- The garage door mechanism — tracks, rollers, and the bottom edge of an up-and-over as it swings
- Anything leaning against a wall, which will eventually stop leaning
Height is the filter
Almost nothing below knee height or above shoulder height matters, and almost everything between them does. That narrows the problem enormously and it is why the walk-round works — you are not auditing the garage, you are auditing one horizontal band of it.
Moving things beats padding things
Padding a bracket is a reasonable second-best. Removing the bike from the floor entirely removes the hazard, removes the obstacle you squeeze past, and gives back the floor space — which is the same argument the garage section already makes in getting bulky gear off the garage floor.
Pad what cannot move. Move what can.
A cover is impact protection indoors
Outdoors a cover is about weather. Indoors, in a shared space, it is about the thing you carry past the car at eleven at night. That is a legitimate reason to use one, with the caveat that an indoor cover still has to breathe.

Moving the bikes out entirely costs nothing and is the single most effective item on this page.
The mistake to avoid
Auditing the garage with the car outside. The hazards only exist relative to where the car sits, and with the car gone the space looks generous and safe. Do the walk-round with the car parked and the doors open, or you will pad the wrong things.
The second mistake is fixing hooks into plasterboard without checking what is behind it. A hook rated for a bike is only as good as its fixing, and a bike coming off a wall lands on the roof or the wing of the car underneath it — turning a protective measure into the worst single impact the garage can produce.
