The fuel gauge is not linear and the last quarter is not a quarter. Two tankfuls of arithmetic gives you a number you can actually plan against.

The problem, as it appears

The gauge sits at full for what feels like ages, then seems to fall off a cliff somewhere past half. The warning light appears and you have no reliable idea whether that means thirty miles or eighty.

On familiar routes it does not matter. On an unfamiliar one, in the dark, between two towns, it does.

Why reading the gauge harder disappoints

Because it is a level indicator, and you want a distance.

Inside the tank a float on an arm sweeps an arc. The tank itself is an irregular shape, moulded around the floorpan, the exhaust and the suspension — so it is wider in some places than others. Equal movements of the float therefore correspond to unequal volumes of fuel.

That is the whole explanation for the familiar pattern: a long plateau near full where the tank is widest, then a faster fall as the float moves through the narrower part. The gauge is not lying and it is not broken; it is answering a different question from the one you are asking.

The question you actually have — how far can I go — depends on consumption, which the gauge knows nothing about.

What actually matters

Brim to brim, two or three times

The measurement that replaces a trip computer, and it costs nothing but attention.

Fill until the pump clicks off. Reset the trip meter. Drive normally. Fill again at the same pump setting, and record the distance and the volume it took.

Do it two or three times and average it. One tankful can be distorted by an unusual journey mix or by how full "full" was; three gives you a figure for your car as you actually drive it, which is more useful than any published number.

From that you get the number to plan with: a comfortable distance between fills, chosen with a margin you decide deliberately rather than one the warning light decides for you.

The warning light is a level, not a distance

It illuminates at a fuel level. How far that level takes you depends entirely on what you do next.

The same warning means something very different at a steady motorway cruise than in stop-start traffic, and the reserve differs substantially between models. Treating it as a fixed number of miles is the specific belief that leaves people on the hard shoulder.

Speed and the roof cost more than anything else

If a journey needs planning, these are the two variables with real leverage.

What is available varies by manufacturer and model, so this is worth checking against your specific car rather than assuming. When it works it is the closest thing to a proper fix.

Tyre pressure is the free adjustment

Under-inflated tyres deform more as they roll and absorb energy doing it, which shows up as consumption long before it shows up as anything you can feel through the wheel.

It also affects wear and braking, so it earns checking regardless of range. Before a long trip, with the tyres cold, is the right moment — and a gauge you trust beats the one on the forecourt airline, which lives outdoors and gets driven over.

Running very low has costs beyond the obvious

Not an emergency, and worth avoiding as a habit.

Sediment settles at the bottom of a tank, and on many cars the fuel pump sits inside the tank and is cooled by the fuel surrounding it. Repeatedly running down to the light is not kind to either arrangement.

Planning to refuel at a quarter rather than at the warning is a rule that costs nothing and removes the whole problem.

Carrying fuel is a last resort with rules

Worth a mention because it is the obvious answer and it is more constrained than people assume: approved containers, quantity limits, ventilation, and never in the passenger compartment if it can be avoided.

The mistake to avoid

Treating the warning light as a distance. It reports a level, and the distance that level represents depends on speed, load, traffic and the specific car — so the same light is comfortably sixty miles on one journey and much less on another. People who have driven a long way on it once calibrate to that experience, which is the least reliable data point available.

The second mistake is planning a long trip on the manufacturer's published consumption. That figure comes from a standardised procedure and your car has a roof box, four people, luggage and a driver with a cruising speed — all of which move it in the same direction. Three tankfuls of your own arithmetic is a better number than any published one, and it is the only one that describes the car you are actually driving.
