Roof Load and How It Changes Handling
The roof limit is lower than people expect and it includes the rack. Why weight up there matters more than the same weight in the boot, and what changes on the road.

The problem, as it appears
The boot is full and the roof is empty, so the roof is where the rest goes. It is flat, it is unoccupied, and there is a rack on it already or one can be bought.
Then the car feels different — floatier through corners, more affected by lorries, and thirstier than the same journey usually is. Nothing is wrong. That is what a roof load does.
Why "it's only twenty kilos" disappoints
Because the number is not the variable that matters. Height is.
Twenty kilos in the boot sits low and close to the centre of the car, where it barely changes the balance. The same twenty kilos on the roof is the highest mass on the vehicle, and height gives it leverage over how the car rolls.
That is why a roof load you would consider trivial in the boot produces a change you can feel immediately, and why manufacturers publish a roof figure that looks surprisingly small next to the car's overall payload. The two limits are protecting different things.
What actually matters
The limit includes everything up there
This is the detail that trips people, and it is not a technicality.
The roof rating covers the entire assembly: crossbars, feet, the box or bag, and the contents. A set of bars plus a hard box can account for a substantial portion of a modest limit before anything is packed, so the usable load is what remains rather than what the manual says.
Work it out on paper before the trip, not while standing in a driveway with the car already loaded.
Dynamic and static are different numbers
Worth stating plainly because the confusion is genuinely hazardous.
Dynamic roof load is what the roof may carry while the car is moving. This is the figure for luggage, and it is the smaller one.
Static roof load is what the roof supports when parked, and it is typically far higher. It exists because of products like roof tents, which load the roof only when stationary.
Reading the static figure as permission to drive with that weight up there is a real mistake and the one worth being explicit about.
What changes on the road
The handling effects are predictable rather than mysterious, which makes them manageable.
- Roll in corners. More body movement, and it arrives sooner than expected. Slower entry speeds.
- Crosswind. A tall load has a large side area high up. Exposed bridges and passing lorries move the car more than usual.
- Braking. More mass and more forward pitch. Leave more space.
- Fuel and noise. Mostly drag rather than weight, and it worsens steeply with speed.
None of these makes a properly loaded car unsafe. All of them argue for driving it as a different vehicle rather than the one you are used to.
Pack low, heavy things first, and secured to the bars
Weight distribution within the load matters as well. Heavy items go at the bottom and centred over the bars rather than at the ends, which keeps the load's own centre of gravity as low as it can be.
Anything on a roof needs restraint that does not loosen, and the failure mode of the cheap option is well documented — bungee cords versus ratchet straps is the argument, and a roof at speed is the least forgiving place to get it wrong.
Check the straps at the first stop. Loads settle, and a strap that was tight in the driveway is routinely looser an hour later.
Take it off afterwards
An empty rack still costs fuel and still makes noise, every day, for the eleven months of the year it is not needed.
It also quietly consumes some of the roof allowance and adds a step to every car wash. Removing it is free and almost nobody does it.

Not using the roof suits more journeys than people think. Reducing what is being carried, or posting some of it, is often the cheaper answer — and a boot packed properly holds more than a boot packed carelessly, which is most of what car clutter on a daily driver is about.

The mistake to avoid
Treating the roof as spare capacity because the boot is full. The two are not interchangeable, and the roof limit is set by what height does to the car's balance rather than by what the structure could theoretically hold. A car within its total weight limit can still be over its roof limit.
The second mistake is loading to the limit and driving as usual. The figures assume the car is being driven appropriately for its condition, and the effects above — roll, crosswind, braking distance — all arrive together at exactly the moment you need none of them. Slower, earlier, more space, and a check on the straps at the first stop.
