Start with the compatibility trap: an OBD2 scanner is useless on a car with no OBD2 port. In the US, OBD2 is the normal standard from 1996. In Europe, broad petrol and diesel adoption came later. A 1970s or 1980s classic is very likely to have nothing for this tool to read.

That warning belongs first because a scanner looks like a universal car gadget and is not one.

For most people, the useful functions are modest:

  • Read the fault code that triggered the warning light.
  • See whether the code is emissions, sensor, misfire or something less urgent.
  • Clear the light after a known temporary fault, then watch whether it returns.
  • View a few live values when diagnosing a simple problem.

That does not require a workshop tablet. It does require a scanner that connects reliably and an app that explains codes without pretending a code is a diagnosis.

The compatibility trap that catches iPhone owners

Before buying any Bluetooth adapter, check which kind of Bluetooth it uses, because this is not a feature tier — it decides whether the thing works with your phone at all.

Bluetooth Classic adapters do not work with an iPhone. iOS does not support Classic for this class of device, so an adapter built around it is Android-only no matter what the listing implies. These are frequently the cheapest results in any search, which is exactly how people end up with one.

Bluetooth LE adapters work with both. This is what you want unless you know you are on Android and intend to stay there.

What it will not do

It will not tell you the failed part with certainty. A fault code points to a circuit, a sensor reading, or a condition the ECU has observed. The cause may be wiring, vacuum leaks, low voltage, a bad sensor, or the thing that sensor is reporting.

It also will not help when the car does not communicate. A flat battery, bad ground or incompatible protocol can look exactly like a bad scanner from the driver's seat.

And it will not reset anything. This is the gap between what readers expect a scanner to do and what the OBD2 port exposes. Veepeak states plainly that the dongle performs no oil or service reset, no electronic parking brake reset, and no relearning or adaptation — and that ABS and airbag lights cannot be cleared over standard OBD2 at all. A reader buying a dongle to put out a warning light that is not a powertrain code has bought the wrong category, not a faulty product.

The protocol list is the one people skip. It does not speak MS-CAN or SW-CAN, which some Ford and GM modules use — so a dongle can pair successfully, read engine codes fine, and still be unable to see the module a reader is chasing. Who should buy which scanner

Buy a Bluetooth adapter if you are comfortable with phone apps and want the scanner to live in the glovebox. This is the best fit for someone who wants to read a code in a parking lot, decide whether the car can be driven, and then research the fault properly at home.

Buy a guided app-based scanner if explanations matter more than raw data. That usually costs more, but the value is not the plastic dongle; it is the code database, repair reports and vehicle coverage. This is where BlueDriver-style products justify their existence for non-specialists.

Buy a higher-end adapter if you already know you need a specific app. FORScan, BimmerCode, AlfaOBD and similar tools are their own worlds, and the adapter should be chosen around that software rather than the other way around.

Will an OBD2 scanner work on a classic car?
Usually no. A pre-1996 US-market car and many older European cars do not have an OBD2 port, so there is nothing for a modern Bluetooth scanner to plug into. Check for the 16-pin trapezoidal connector, normally within reach of the driver's footwell, before buying anything.
Do Bluetooth scanners clear fault codes?
Many can clear basic engine codes when paired with the right app, but clearing a code does not fix the fault. It only turns off the warning until the system sees the problem again.
Where is the OBD2 port usually located?
Within about a foot and a half of the steering wheel in most cars, commonly under the dash near the driver's knee, sometimes behind a small removable panel or above the pedals. The standard requires it to be reachable from the driver's seat without tools, so if you cannot find it without dismantling something, you are probably looking in the wrong place.
What is the difference between generic and enhanced diagnostics?

Yes, and it is a genuine risk on a car that sits.
