Testing a Display Cable Before Replacing It
Flicker, black screens and a monitor that will not hold its refresh rate are often the cable. How to prove it before buying a third one.

The problem, as it actually presents
The screen flickers. Or goes black for a second and comes back. Or sparkles with brief coloured artefacts. Or refuses to hold the refresh rate it held last week and quietly reverts to 60 Hz.
All four have the same top suspect, and it is the cheapest component in the chain. Display cables fail gradually — a conductor fatigued by being bent behind a desk, a connector that has been in and out of a monitor arm's cable channel a dozen times — and gradual failure produces exactly these symptoms rather than a clean loss of picture.
Why the obvious solution disappoints
Buying a new cable works about half the time and teaches nothing the other half. The failure mode is that the second cable behaves the same, the third one is bought, and by then it is genuinely unclear whether the problem was ever the cable — because nothing was measured, only substituted.

What actually matters
Reduce the demand, then read the result
Bandwidth demand is resolution times refresh rate times colour depth. A cable that is marginal at the top of that range is usually fine well below it, so the test is simply to ask for less:
- Set 1080p at 60 Hz. If the fault clears, the link is bandwidth-limited and the cable is the first suspect.
- If it persists, try the same cable on a different port, then a different cable on the original port.
- If every combination fails identically, the cable was never the problem.

A tester checks that every pin is continuous and none are shorted. That is a real check and it finds real faults — a cable crushed by a castor, a connector pulled at an angle — but it is a static electrical test. It cannot tell you whether a cable that passes continuity will carry high-bandwidth signal cleanly, which is where marginal cables actually fail.
So the tester's honest role is confirmation and triage across several cables, not the first move.
Length and certification beat price
A cable's ability to carry a given bandwidth is set by its construction and its length, and it is declared by certification rather than by cost. A certified cable of the right specification and a sensible length is what you want; a more expensive one of the same certification is the same cable.

The mistake to avoid
Replacing the cable before establishing that it is bandwidth-limited. It is the cheapest component, which makes it the easiest thing to replace and the easiest thing to blame — and half the time the symptom returns because the cause was a display that drops off the bus, a connector that will not stay seated, or a monitor genuinely on its way out.
