Running One Screen in Portrait

Rotating a screen is close to free and transforms reading. What decides it is the mount, and the viewing angle you inherit when the panel turns.

Turn a second screen, not your main one. Portrait is transformative for reading and poor for everything wide, so it belongs beside a landscape screen rather than replacing one.

Two things decide whether it works: whether your mount rotates at all, and how the panel behaves once its weaker viewing axis is pointing sideways.

The problem, as it appears

You spend the day scrolling. Code, a document, a long page, a chat log — all of them run off the bottom of the screen while a third of the width sits empty.

The instinct is that you need a bigger screen, or another one.

Why buying width disappoints

Because what you are short of is height, and screens are sold by width.

A widescreen panel is shaped for video. Reading is shaped the other way — text has a comfortable line length, and past it you stop reading faster and start losing your place on the return. That is why documents are laid out in columns rather than across the full width of anything.

So a wider screen gives you more of the dimension you already had spare, and the vertical constraint is unchanged. Adding a second landscape screen does the same thing twice.

Rotating one of them ninety degrees turns the spare dimension into the scarce one, and on a screen you already own it costs nothing but a mount that can do it.

What actually matters

Whether anything you own can rotate

The first question, and the one that stops most people.

The feature is called pivot, and plenty of bundled stands do not have it — it is more common on business-oriented screens than on gaming ones. Check yours before assuming, because a stand that pivots makes this free.

If it cannot, an arm is the usual answer, and it brings height and depth adjustment with it.

Some screens have no mounting points at all

Worth checking early, because it is the thing that turns a plan into a return.

The viewing angle turns with the panel

This is the real catch and it is almost never mentioned.

Panels are not equally good in every direction, and most are noticeably weaker along their vertical axis than their horizontal one — brightness and colour shift more as you move up and down than as you move side to side.

Rotate the screen and that weaker axis becomes the side-to-side one. On a tall screen your eyes are not far off-centre vertically, but they are now looking across the panel's poor axis. The result is a visible shift in brightness or tint from one edge to the other on a cheaper panel, and something you have to look for on a good one.

It costs nothing to test: rotate whatever you have and look at a plain white page before buying a mount for it.

Height, and the rule that changes

A tall screen positioned by the usual advice ends up too high.

The familiar guidance puts the middle of a screen near eye level, which for a portrait panel leaves the top a long way above it — and you spend the day tipping your head back to read the top third.

Setting the top at roughly eye level works better in this orientation. Reading material is comfortable slightly below the horizontal anyway, which is why people angle books downward without being told to.

Where it goes on the desk

Beside the main screen, angled inward, and closer to the desk than a landscape panel wants to be.

Portrait screens are tall, so they need the mount to travel further down than a riser allows, and they occupy less width than people expect — which frequently means the pair fits where you assumed they would not.

Software is the easy half

Rotation is a display setting on every current operating system and it takes seconds.

The only subtlety is text rendering: subpixel smoothing assumes the coloured stripes inside each pixel run a particular way, and rotating turns that sideways. On a dense modern panel this is difficult to notice. On an older, coarser screen it can show as faint colour fringing along letter edges, and switching to grayscale smoothing removes it.

It is bad at the things it is bad at

Worth saying plainly rather than discovering it. Video is letterboxed into a strip. Games either refuse the aspect ratio or place interface elements at extreme edges. Spreadsheets lose the columns they needed.

None of that is a fault. It is the trade, and it is why this is advice about a second screen — the same reasoning that runs through ultrawide vs dual monitors.

The order to work in

  1. Check whether your stand pivots. If it does, this is free.
  2. Rotate it and look at a white page before spending anything.
  3. Confirm mounting points, and an adapter if there are none.
  4. Set the top at about eye level, not the middle.
  5. Put it beside the main screen, angled inward.
  6. Switch to grayscale smoothing if letters show colour fringing.

The mistake to avoid

Rotating your only screen. Portrait is excellent for a specific kind of work and poor for video, games and anything wide, so making it the sole display trades a permanent loss for an intermittent gain. The arrangement people keep is landscape ahead, portrait beside — and the ones who try it as their only screen usually turn it back within a week.

The second mistake is buying an arm before checking the panel. Rotation moves a screen's weak viewing axis to where your eyes actually travel, and on some panels that is immediately visible as a shift in brightness across the width. Five minutes with the screen turned on its side, held by hand, answers the question that the mount would otherwise answer expensively — the same reason is a monitor arm worth it argues for knowing what you want from one before buying.

Questions people actually ask

What is portrait actually good for?
Anything whose constraint is vertical rather than horizontal — code, documents, long web pages, logs, chat, PDFs at a readable size. Those are limited by how many lines you can see at once, and turning a widescreen panel ninety degrees roughly doubles that while giving up width you were not using for reading anyway.
What is the catch nobody mentions?
Viewing angle rotates with the panel. Most screens are noticeably worse along their vertical axis than their horizontal one, and rotating makes that weaker axis the side-to-side one — so brightness and colour can shift from one edge of the tall screen to the other as you sit in front of it. It is mild on a good IPS panel and obvious on a cheap TN one.
Do I need a monitor arm?

What if the screen has no VESA holes?
