Should a Gaming PC Sit on the Floor?
Carpet is the worst place a tower can stand, and the reason is not dust alone. What raising it actually changes, and when the floor is genuinely fine.

The floor is the dustiest air in the room and carpet is the worst version of it. Raising a tower a few centimetres fixes most of that — and the reason is more specific than "dust rises", which is not what happens.

The problem, as it appears
Most towers place an intake on the underside — the power supply almost always, and frequently a front intake that reaches close to the floor. A case standing directly on carpet has those intakes a centimetre or two above a deep reservoir of textile fibre that is disturbed every time somebody walks past.
The result is not subtle. Machines that live on carpet accumulate visible fibre mats on the PSU intake filter within months, and PSU filters are the ones nobody checks because reaching them means moving the whole machine.
Why "dust rises" disappoints as an explanation
It is the usual justification and it is wrong. Dust settles — that is what makes it dust. The reason floor air is worse is not buoyancy but disturbance: footfall, chair wheels and door movement repeatedly re-suspend what has settled, so the lowest layer of a room is the one cycling most particulate through the air at any moment.
Getting this right matters because it explains the actual fix. If dust rose, height would not help. It does help, and only a few centimetres of it, because the point is to sit above the layer that keeps getting stirred rather than to escape a rising column.
What actually matters
Whether the bottom intake is clear. This is the largest single factor. Case feet give a centimetre or two of clearance, which is adequate on a hard floor and inadequate on carpet, where the pile closes around the gap and can seal it almost completely.
What the floor is made of. Hard flooring is genuinely acceptable. It holds far less dust, releases it less readily, and cannot obstruct an intake. Carpet is the case that needs solving.
Whether it can be moved without lifting. A tower that has to be lifted to be cleaned behind is a tower nobody cleans behind. This is the strongest practical argument for a wheeled stand, and it has nothing to do with airflow.
Whether the machine gets kicked. Under a desk at floor level, a case is in the same space as feet and chair wheels. Side panels dent, and a knock to a running machine with a heavy air cooler is not ideal for the socket carrying it.
What the surface does with vibration. This is the argument for the floor rather than against it, and it is the one people move a tower onto a desk without considering. A desk is a large thin panel on legs, which is close to the description of a soundboard — a case standing on it couples whatever its fans and drives are doing into that panel, and a hollow-core desk amplifies the result. A tower on a hard floor is coupling into something with vastly more mass, and it is also a metre further from your ears. If the machine is being moved up to the desk for airflow reasons, expect it to get more audible rather than less, and expect a mechanical drive to be the part you suddenly notice — the cheap rubber fix for hard drive rattle applies with more force up there than down here.
The options, and who each suits
A wheeled stand suits anyone on carpet, which is the main case here. It lifts the intakes clear of the pile, and the wheels solve the cleaning-access problem that raising it alone would not. Locked casters matter more than the load rating.

Anything flat and rigid — a paving slab, a shelf offcut, a plywood square — does the height part of the job for nothing at all, and this site is not going to pretend otherwise. It suits anyone who does not need to move the machine. It does not suit a tower that needs pulling out to reach the cables.
The desk suits a machine that fits and a desk that can take the weight. Desk-height air is cleaner still, and the intakes are visible so they get noticed. The costs are noise, which is now at ear height, and vibration transmitted into the desk surface.
Leaving it on a hard floor is genuinely fine, and worth saying plainly. If the floor is wood, tile or laminate and the machine is not being kicked, this is not a problem that needs a product.
The mistake to avoid
Raising the machine and treating the dust problem as solved. Height reduces the rate at which intakes foul; it does not stop it. A raised machine with unfiltered intakes still fills up, just more slowly — the two measures are complementary and dust filters are the half that does the catching.
The second mistake is pushing a raised tower against a wall to recover the floor space gained. Rear exhaust needs somewhere to go, and a case with its exhaust a few centimetres from plasterboard recirculates its own hot air. Whatever height it sits at, leave a gap behind it.
