Dust Filters and the Airflow They Cost You
A filter is a deliberate trade: less dust reaching the heatsinks, less air reaching them too. Where that trade pays, and where covers do nothing at all.

A dust filter is a trade, not an upgrade: it stops dust reaching the heatsinks and it costs some airflow doing it. On any machine that will not be stripped and cleaned every two months, that trade is worth making — and most of the other dust-blocking products sold alongside filters do close to nothing.

The problem, as it appears
Dust does not accumulate evenly. It collects hardest where air moves fastest through the narrowest gaps, which is exactly the heatsink fin stacks doing the cooling. A CPU cooler or graphics card fin stack with a felt layer across its face has lost surface area contacting moving air, and the fan compensates by spinning faster.
The unpleasant part is that this compounds. Faster fans move more air, more air carries more dust, and the interval to the next problem shortens each cycle.
Why "just clean it more often" disappoints
It works, and almost nobody does it. Cleaning heatsinks properly means opening the case, moving it outdoors, holding every fan and working through the fin stacks with a brush — an hour that gets deferred until the machine is audibly struggling.
A filter changes the economics rather than the physics. It concentrates the dust somewhere flat, accessible and rinseable, so the hour-long job becomes a two-minute one that actually gets done. The airflow it costs is the price of that.
What actually matters
Where the filter sits. Only intakes need filtering. A filter on an exhaust does nothing useful and costs airflow anyway — air leaving the case is not carrying room dust into it.
Whether the case is at positive pressure. If intake airflow exceeds exhaust, air leaves through every unsealed gap rather than entering through them. That is what makes filtering worthwhile: seal the entry points that are filtered, and unfiltered air has no route in. A case at negative pressure pulls dust in through every seam regardless of what is on the front.
How easily it comes off. A filter that requires removing the front panel and four screws is a filter that gets cleaned once. Magnetic frames and slide-out trays get cleaned monthly, which is what determines whether any of this works.
The mesh density. Finer mesh catches more and restricts more. For a normal room, coarser is the better trade — it catches the fibres and pet hair that actually clog fin stacks while passing the fine particulate that mostly moves straight through anyway.
The options, and who each suits
Magnetic mesh filter sheets are the default. They cut to size, attach to any steel panel, and come off with one hand. They suit any case whose built-in filtration is partial — which is most cases below the premium tier, where the front is filtered and the top and floor intakes are not.

Fan-mount dust covers suit unused fan mounts specifically — the empty positions a case ships with, which are open holes in a pressurised box. Blanking those is genuinely useful and costs no airflow, because nothing is moving through them by design.

PCIe slot covers are worth being blunt about: in a running machine they achieve very little. A case's own fans dominate airflow completely, and incidental gaps are not meaningful entry points while the machine is pressurised. They matter for a machine that sits unused, and they tidy the back of a case. Neither is a thermal argument.

USB port plugs are the same story with less to recommend them. Ports are shallow, sealed at the back, and a blast of air clears one in a second. They suit a machine going into long storage or a workshop with airborne debris.

The mistake to avoid
Fitting filters and then not cleaning them. A blocked filter restricts airflow far more than any filter costs when clean, and it does it silently — the machine simply runs hotter and louder over months. A filtered case with a neglected filter is worse than an unfiltered one.
The interval is not the calendar, it is the look of the mesh. Grey rather than black means due. In a normal room that lands around monthly; with pets or carpet, sooner.
The second mistake is filtering the intakes while leaving the case at negative pressure, which routes unfiltered air in through every seam and makes the filters ornamental.
