Stopping Battery Terminal Corrosion Returning
Protector spray keeps a clean terminal clean; it is not a substitute for cleaning one that is already corroded. Felt washers do a similar job differently.
Battery terminal corrosion has a genuinely simple fix and a genuinely common mistake: treating a protector product as something that removes corrosion, when its entire job is preventing corrosion that has not started yet.
What corrosion actually is
The white or blue-green crust on a terminal is not dirt — it is a chemical reaction. A battery vents small amounts of hydrogen gas and sulfuric acid vapour during normal charging, and that vapour reacts with the terminal metal it settles on. A lead terminal typically corrodes to a pale grey-white deposit; a copper-clad or brass clamp, more often on the positive terminal, corrodes to the familiar blue-green. Knowing this is a chemical reaction rather than surface grime is what explains why a protector product actually works — it physically blocks the vapour from reaching bare metal, rather than cleaning anything.
Why spraying over corrosion does not work
A terminal protector is a preventative barrier — applied to clean metal, it slows the chemical reaction that produces corrosion in the first place. Sprayed over terminals that are already corroded, it does not clean anything; it just seals the existing corrosion in place, which can make a compromised connection worse rather than better by trapping moisture against it.
What actually matters
Clean first, protect second — always in that order. Battery terminal cleaning covers the cleaning step properly; protector spray is what comes after, not instead of it.

Felt washers are a genuine alternative, not a lesser one. Treated felt discs placed under the terminal clamp act as a physical barrier where the metal surfaces actually meet, rather than a sprayed coating over the outside. Some people combine both for extra protection; either alone is a reasonable, established approach.
Dedicated products beat generic grease here. The environment around a battery terminal is genuinely acidic, and a protector product formulated for that is a safer bet than plain grease, which was not designed with that specific chemistry in mind.
The mistake to avoid
Reaching for protector spray as a first response to visibly corroded terminals. Clean the corrosion off properly first — a wire brush and the right technique, not a spray — then apply protection to keep the now-clean connection that way.
