Stopping Plastic Trim Fading and Cracking in the Sun

Faded black trim is such a common sight on older cars that it barely registers as a problem worth fixing — until a protectant applied too late does nothing, or a restorer chosen for maximum shine fades back to grey within weeks.

Why timing decides which product you need

A UV protectant is prevention. Applied to trim that has not yet degraded, it slows the oxidation that eventually turns black plastic grey and chalky. It is not a fix for trim that has already faded — there is no colour left to protect once the damage is done, only a coating going onto already-degraded material.

A trim restorer is repair. It redarkens plastic that has already faded, using a dye or oil-based formula to bring back colour rather than prevent future loss. Reaching for a protectant on trim that needs a restorer, or vice versa, is the most common way people end up disappointed with either product.

Gloss level is not the same as quality. A high-gloss "wet look" restorer often relies on a thinner coating to achieve that shine, and it can fade back to grey within weeks — faster than a more matte, durable formula that looks less dramatic on day one but holds its result meaningfully longer. Judge a restorer on how it looks after several washes, not the first photo.

This is ongoing maintenance, not a one-time fix. Both products need reapplication — a protectant on a schedule to keep preventing damage, a restorer every few weeks to months depending on wash frequency and sun exposure. Buying either expecting a permanent result sets up disappointment regardless of which one is used.
