How to Restore Cloudy Headlights at Home

Sanding removes the oxidized layer, but the UV sealant afterward is what actually keeps headlights clear — and it's the step most kits skip.

Cloudy headlights are one of the few car-care jobs where the visible symptom and the actual fault are the same distance apart every time: what looks like dirty plastic is a chemical breakdown of the lens coating, and no amount of washing or wiping touches it.

Why washing does nothing

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic with a factory-applied clear coating that blocks UV light. Years of sun exposure degrade that coating until it fails, and the polycarbonate underneath then oxidizes on its own — a genuine chemical change to the plastic surface, not a layer of grime sitting on top of it. That is why detergent and a sponge have no effect: there is nothing on the surface to wash off.

What actually matters

Sanding removes the damaged layer. Progressive grits cut through the oxidized plastic down to clear material underneath — this is the step that restores actual clarity, and it is genuinely necessary once oxidation has set in. Polish alone, without sanding first, buffs the surface of a still-damaged layer and the result fades within weeks.

The sealant is the step that makes it last. This is the part cheap kits and rushed jobs skip, and it is the single biggest reason DIY headlight restoration gets a reputation for not lasting. Freshly sanded polycarbonate has no UV protection at all — less than it had before, since the original factory coating is gone. A UV-protective sealant applied immediately after sanding is what replaces that protection. Skip it, and the same UV exposure that caused the original problem starts the clock again immediately, often producing visible haze within a few months rather than the year-plus a sealed job can hold.

Drill-based kits speed up bad cases. A drill attachment applies more even pressure across the sanding stages than working by hand, which shows up most on lenses with heavy, long-standing oxidation. For lightly hazy lenses the difference between powered and hand application matters less than doing the sealant step properly.

The mistake to avoid

Stopping after sanding and polishing, satisfied with how clear the lenses look immediately, and never applying the sealant. That sequence produces the best-looking result of the whole process and the shortest-lived one — the newly exposed plastic has zero UV protection until the sealant goes on, so skipping it effectively restarts the oxidation clock at full speed rather than the years it took the first time from the factory coating.

Cloudy lenses and dull wheels tend to show up on the same neglected car, so cleaning wheels without scratching the finish and keeping windshield trim clean without scratching chrome are worth doing in the same session.
