Storing Aerosols and Fluids in an Unheated Garage
A garage swings further in temperature than anywhere else you keep things. What that does to aerosols, paint and car fluids, and where each one should actually live.

Measure the range before deciding anything. A garage swings further in temperature and humidity than anywhere else you store things, and the useful number is not today's reading but the highest and lowest of the year. A monitor that records both answers the whole question for very little.
Then sort what you have into three groups: things temperature genuinely damages, things it does not, and things that belong out of a garage entirely.

The problem, as it appears
The garage accumulates the things the house does not want. Half-used paint, screenwash, brake cleaner, a can of penetrating oil, spare oil from the last service, whatever came with the car.
None of it seemed like a decision. Then something separates and will not mix back, or a can is bulging slightly, or the shelf it was all on has swollen at the ends and is sagging.
Why "it's just a garage" disappoints
Because a garage is not a mild version of indoors — it is closer to outdoors with a roof.
An uninsulated garage tracks the outside temperature closely, and an attached one under a dark roof can beat it in summer. Overnight it cools and moisture condenses on whatever is coldest, which is usually the floor and anything sitting on it.
So the storage conditions are not "cool and dry". They are a cycle, repeated daily and seasonally, and it is the cycling rather than any single reading that does the damage.
What actually matters
Measure the range, not the moment
Guessing at this is the common failure and it is easily avoided. A monitor that records highs and lows tells you whether your garage genuinely approaches the temperatures on the labels, and the answer varies enormously between an attached insulated garage and a detached single skin one.

Aerosols have a stated maximum and it is printed on the can
This is the one place where there is a real published limit rather than a judgement. Aerosol cans carry a maximum storage temperature — commonly in the region of fifty degrees Celsius — and it is there because the contents are under pressure.
Practical consequences: keep them out of direct sunlight, keep them off the highest shelf where heat collects, and never store them near a heater. The heater point is not theoretical, and it connects to a hazard covered fully in warming and ventilating a garage safely — many solvent vapours are heavier than air and pool at floor level, which is exactly where a portable heater sits.
Freezing damages some things permanently and others not at all
The category is much less uniform than people treat it.
Damaged by freezing. Water-based paints and anything emulsified. Freezing can break the emulsion, and once separated it does not go back — stirring produces a mixture that looks recovered and does not behave like the original. Screenwash concentrate can also drop out of solution.
Not meaningfully damaged. Engine oil thickens dramatically and returns to normal on warming. Coolant is already formulated to resist freezing at its correct dilution.
Depends. Adhesives, sealants and anything with a stated storage range on the label — which is where the answer actually is.
Store low, and get things off the floor
Both, and they are not contradictory. The floor is the coldest surface and where condensation appears first, so cardboard packaging degrades there and steel cans corrode from underneath.

Material matters more than load rating on garage shelving
Particleboard swells and sags in a damp garage regardless of what it is rated for, and the failure is gradual enough that nobody notices until a shelf has a curve in it.
Coated steel and moulded plastic both survive the cycling. Load ratings are quoted per shelf and assume an evenly spread load, which is not how anyone actually stacks fluid containers.
The options, and who each suits
Open shelving in coated steel or plastic suits most garages and most collections. It is the default answer and it addresses the two things that actually go wrong: damp at floor level and material that cannot cope with cycling.

Sealed bins for small items suit aerosols, small bottles and anything whose label you would like to still be able to read in three years. They also contain a leak, which is the one thing open shelving does not do.

Moving some of it out entirely suits the things that should never have been in a garage: petrol in quantity, anything with a storage range the garage genuinely exceeds, and half-empty tins nobody will use. The cheapest storage improvement is usually disposal.
The mistake to avoid
Assuming the whole category behaves the same way. "Don't let it freeze" is applied to everything and is only true of some of it, so people move oil indoors and leave water-based paint on a cold floor — precisely backwards. The label carries the answer and it takes a moment to read.
The second mistake is storing aerosols high because they are small and light. Heat collects at the top of a space, the highest shelf in a sunlit garage is the hottest place in it, and the cans with a printed temperature limit are the ones that ended up there.
