A 180-degree light bar with a UV mode for finding fluid leaks. Both white settings run 3.75 hours, because the second one is not a power saver.

For engine bay work this is a genuinely good light shape — a wide bar rather than a torch, which is the distinction that matters in a confined space. The specification worth reading twice is the runtime, because it does not mean what it looks like it means.

The problem it addresses
Light under a bonnet is a shape problem, not a brightness one. A torch produces a bright circle and a hard shadow, and the thing you are trying to see is almost always in the shadow — a seep down the side of a block, a chafed loom behind a bracket, the underside of a hose union.
What works is broad, even light from close range, positioned and left alone so both hands are free. That is the argument already made in rechargeable work lights for working under a car, and this is a well-shaped example of the category.

Two lines want reading carefully: the two runtimes, and the UV mode.
The runtime is not two settings
The obvious reading of "800 lumens high, 600 lumens low" is a bright mode and an economy mode. It is not. The 600 lumen setting is a high colour rendering mode — better colour accuracy, not longer life — and Streamlight specifies both at 3.75 hours.
That has a practical consequence the spec sheet does not spell out. On a normal work light, the low setting is the reserve: you drop to it when the battery is going and you get another two or three hours out of the job. Here there is no reserve. The light has one runtime, and dropping to the "low" setting buys you nothing but nicer colour.
Against eight hours to recharge, that is a light which does most of a session and then needs the rest of the day. For someone working through a weekend that is a real constraint, and it is the single strongest reason to consider something cheaper alongside it.
What it gets right
The bar shape is correct for the job. Seventeen inches extended spreads output across a wide area rather than concentrating it, which is why a 800 lumen bar is more useful under a bonnet than a 1000 lumen torch. The 180-degree rotation means it works clipped to a bonnet lip, magnetised to a slam panel, or hung as a droplight without needing a different product for each.
The UV mode is the genuine differentiator, and it is automotive rather than generic. Dye-traced coolant and air-conditioning leaks are effectively invisible in daylight and obvious under UV, and at 15 hours it outruns both white modes by a factor of four. Nobody buys a work light for this and it is the feature most likely to find a fault the others cannot.

Ugly score 4, and it barely earns it
It is a black and yellow plastic bar that folds in half, and it looks like professional equipment because it is. There is nothing to object to and nothing to admire.
Four rather than lower because of what it does to an engine bay in use: hanging off a slam panel with a cable, or magnetised at an angle to throw light where you need it, it is one more object in a space that already has too many. That is unavoidable for any work light and it is worth being honest that this one is bigger than most.
Where it stops being the right tool
The water rating depends on who you ask
Streamlight's own specification page states IPX4 — splash resistance. Retail listings for the same model state IPX7, which is temporary immersion. Those are materially different claims about the same object.
This site follows the manufacturer where the two disagree, so IPX4 is what the table above records and what the caution below assumes. The likely explanation is retail copy borrowed from Streamlight's Stinger torch line, which is a different product — but the reason to prefer the manufacturer is not that theory. It is that a marketplace listing is written to sell and a specification page is written to be correct.
Practically: treat it as splash-resistant. A wet engine bay is fine. Leaving it in a drain tray is a bet on a number that two sources disagree about.
The charge-to-use ratio
Under four hours of light for eight hours on charge means one working session per day. Anyone doing a long job needs either a second light, a mains lamp, or the discipline to charge it the night before every time. That is a workflow constraint rather than a defect, and it is the thing most likely to frustrate.
Weight on a thin mount
At 485 grams it is substantially heavier than a compact COB light, and magnetic hold is the product of surface area and steel thickness. On a bonnet lip or thin panel, test it before trusting it above paint you care about.
The UV mode is most of the value

Who should buy it, and who should not
Buy it if you do engine bay work regularly and will use the UV mode, or if colour accuracy matters — tracing a loom where two wire colours differ by a shade is exactly where a high-CRI setting earns its place.
Skip it if the job is occasional. A cheap COB light gives a similar beam for a fraction of the money and usually offers the economy setting this one does not, and the category argument is in rechargeable work lights for working under a car.
Would we buy it again?
Only if the UV mode is going to be used. Without it this is an expensive light with a short runtime and no reserve; with it, it is two tools in one and the second tool finds faults nothing else in the garage will. That condition is the whole verdict.

- Keeps both hands free and puts light exactly where you are looking, at the cost of a coaxial beam that flattens surface detail and hides the shadow a leak shows up in.
- A mains inspection lamp
- Never needs charging, which is the failure mode that actually stops a job, though the cable is one more thing to route around an engine bay.
