Headphone Impedance and Whether You Need an Amp

Impedance is the number everyone quotes and sensitivity is the one that decides. How to tell whether your headphones are short of power, before spending anything.

The problem, as it appears

You read that your headphones are 250 ohms and that high impedance needs an amplifier. Yours are plugged into a laptop and sound fine. Someone tells you that you are not hearing them properly.

Or the reverse: you bought well-reviewed headphones, they are quiet and lifeless from your machine, and every recommendation is a different product.

Why impedance alone disappoints

Because it is half of a two-part question and the half that gets quoted.

Impedance describes resistance to the current driving the drivers. Sensitivity describes how much sound comes out for a given input. Loudness depends on both, so an impedance figure in isolation cannot tell you whether a source can drive something adequately.

The consequences are counter-intuitive and common: high-impedance headphones that are efficient enough to run acceptably from a laptop, and low-impedance ones that are inefficient and disappoint from the same socket. The rule "high ohms means you need an amp" is right often enough to survive and wrong often enough to waste money.

What actually matters

The symptom test, first

This costs nothing and settles most cases.

  • Volume near maximum and still not loud enough → genuinely short of power.
  • Sound thins, hardens or distorts as you approach maximum → the source is running out.
  • Comfortable at a quarter to a third of the dial → nothing is short of power.

That third case is the majority, and it is the one where an amplifier is a purchase with no audible result.

Sensitivity is the number to look up

If you want to check the specification rather than the symptom, find sensitivity — decibels per milliwatt, or per volt — and read it alongside impedance.

The combination is what tells you whether a given output can reach a sensible level. Either number alone is an incomplete sentence, and sensitivity is the one manufacturers bury and reviewers skip.

High impedance exists for a reason that is not sound quality

Studio designs at 250 or 600 ohms came from an environment with long cable runs and several headphones sharing one output, where high impedance was practical.

Those models endure because they are good, not because the impedance is a virtue. They are, however, the group most likely to be genuinely underdriven by a phone or a thin laptop output — so the stereotype has a real basis, it just does not generalise.

DAC and amplifier are different jobs

They usually share a box, which is why the terms get used interchangeably, and separating them tells you what to buy.

The DAC converts digital to analogue. Problems it addresses: hiss, interference, a noticeably poor built-in output.

The amplifier supplies power. Problems it addresses: not loud enough, and distortion near maximum.

Hiss is a different fault entirely

A constant hiss present regardless of volume is not a power problem and an amplifier will not fix it — it will amplify it.

That is usually noise in the source or a grounding issue, and it belongs with ground loops and why speakers hum rather than here.

The mistake to avoid

Buying an amplifier because of a number on a specification sheet. Impedance is the most quoted and least conclusive figure in this topic, and an amplifier bought for headphones that were never short of power produces exactly no audible change — which then gets attributed to the amplifier being insufficient, and the cycle continues upward.

The second mistake is expecting power to change character. An underdriven pair driven properly sounds like itself for the first time, which is a real and satisfying improvement. A properly driven pair given more power sounds identical, and no amount of expenditure alters that.

Questions people actually ask

What does impedance actually tell me?
How much the headphones resist the current driving them, measured in ohms. On its own it says surprisingly little about whether they will go loud enough, because a high-impedance pair can be efficient and a low-impedance pair can be power-hungry. It is a useful number in combination with sensitivity and close to meaningless alone.
Then which number matters?
Sensitivity — how much sound you get for a given input, usually quoted as decibels per milliwatt or per volt. Together with impedance it tells you whether a source can drive them to a sensible level. Sensitivity is the one people ignore and it is the one doing most of the work.
How do I know if I actually need an amp?
By the symptom, not by the specification. If the volume control is near maximum and it is still not loud enough, or the sound goes thin and harsh as you approach the top, the source is struggling. If you listen at a third of the dial, nothing is short of power and an amp will change nothing you can hear.
Why are some headphones 250 or 600 ohms?
They were designed for studio equipment, where high impedance suited long cable runs and multiple headphones sharing an output. Those designs persist because they sound good, not because high impedance is better — and they are the ones most likely to be genuinely underdriven by a phone or a laptop.
