Most cable tidying is cosmetic and the thermal gain is small. Where routing genuinely changes temperatures, and the one arrangement that actually costs you.

The problem, as it appears

Before-and-after photographs of a rebuild show a nest of cables becoming an empty chamber, usually alongside a claim about temperatures.

The tidy version certainly looks better. Whether it runs meaningfully cooler is a separate question, and the answer depends almost entirely on where the cables were.

Why "tidy equals cool" disappoints

Because modern cases already solved most of it.

The rear channel behind the motherboard tray exists precisely so the main chamber stays clear, and most cases route the bulk of the loom there by default. That means the chamber air passes through is largely open before anyone tidies anything.

Once air has a path, adding more clearance produces diminishing returns. A cable lying along the floor of the case, away from any intake, is sitting in still air and obstructing very little.

So the honest position is: tidy for maintenance, access and the side panel — and expect a small thermal change rather than a transformative one.

What actually matters

Intakes and fan inlets, not the general volume

Restriction matters where air is being accelerated, which is at the intake and immediately at a fan's inlet.

  • A bundle across the front intake is a genuine restriction — that is where air enters.
  • A cable hanging into a fan's inlet side disrupts the flow the fan depends on.
  • The same cable elsewhere in the chamber does nearly nothing.

Which face is the inlet is not always obvious, and getting it wrong means tidying the side that does not matter — the rule is in fan orientation and which side is intake.

A cable in a fan is the real failure

This is the one worth checking by eye every single time the case is open.

A loose cable that reaches the blades slows or stalls the fan. It makes a noise people confidently attribute to a failing bearing, it removes that fan's contribution entirely, and over time it can damage the fan or the cable.

It is also completely silent as a diagnosis: temperatures rise, one fan is doing nothing, and nothing in software reports a cable.

Combs are the tidier version of the same idea and they are worth being clear about, because they are sold as an airflow product and are mostly an appearance one. A comb holds a run of cables parallel and evenly spaced, which looks considerably better through a side window and does very little for temperatures that a tied and routed bundle has not already done.

Where they do earn their place is behind the motherboard tray, where a flat, evenly spread bundle closes a side panel that otherwise bows — which is a fit problem rather than a thermal one.

The side panel is the real reason to tidy the back

Not thermal at all, and the reason it belongs in the same job.

Overfilling the rear channel bows the side panel. A bowed panel breaks the seal on filters, can rattle at particular fan speeds, and on some cases will not latch properly — which people then blame on the case being poorly made.

So the constraint behind the tray is thickness, and the payoff is a panel that closes flat.

Do not seal what needs to breathe

The opposite mistake to leaving cables in an intake: tidying so enthusiastically that an intake gets covered by whatever the cables were secured to or against.

Filters and intakes need to stay clear, and the trade filters themselves impose is covered in dust filters and the airflow they cost.

Sleeving and combs are appearance

Worth stating because both get sold near thermal claims.

Braided or sleeved cables are stiffer, which makes them hold a route and look neat. Combs hold a flat even spread because that looks good through a window.

Neither has a meaningful thermal argument, and there is nothing wrong with buying them for how they look — provided that is the reason.

If temperatures are genuinely high

Cable management is not where the answer is. Cleaning, filters, fan curves and paste age all matter more, in that order.

The mistake to avoid

Rebuilding a machine for temperatures that cable routing will not change. It is a satisfying job with a visible result, and on a modern case with a clear chamber the thermal payoff is small — so the afternoon buys appearance while the actual cause, usually dust or a fan curve, is untouched.

The second mistake is skipping the visual check for a cable at a fan. It is the one cable problem that genuinely costs performance, it presents as a bearing noise, and it takes five seconds to rule out with the panel already off — which is also when to confirm nothing has drifted since the last time, in the same pass as a PC that will not POST suggests checking connectors.

Questions people actually ask

Does cable management actually lower temperatures?
A little, and less than the before-and-after photographs suggest. Modern cases route most cables behind the motherboard tray, so the main chamber is already largely clear — and once air has a path, tidying what remains produces a small change rather than a dramatic one. It is worth doing for other reasons.
Where does routing genuinely matter then?
Directly in front of an intake and directly at a fan. A bundle sitting across the front intake or hanging into a fan's inlet is a real restriction, because that is where air is being drawn from. The same cable lying along the floor of the case is doing almost nothing.
What is the arrangement that actually costs performance?
A cable in a fan. Not near it — in it. A loose cable that reaches the blades stalls or slows the fan, makes a noise people misattribute to a bearing, and can eventually damage it. That is the one failure worth checking for by eye every time the case is open.
Should I tidy the back of the tray too?

Do braided or sleeved cables help airflow?
Not meaningfully. They are stiffer, which makes them easier to route neatly and harder to bend into tight spaces, so the benefit is handling and appearance. Anyone claiming a thermal advantage is describing tidiness rather than physics.
What about cable combs?
Purely cosmetic, and worth saying so plainly. They hold cables in an even spread because that looks good through a window. There is no thermal argument for them and they are not sold as if there were.
