Carburettor Cleaning and Re-Tuning
Most faults after storage are a blocked passage rather than a setting, so tuning first chases something that is not there. The order that works.

Clean before you tune. After a period standing, the usual fault is a passage partly closed by residue, and a mixture screw cannot open it — turning one only compensates until it cannot.
And when tuning does come, the ignition goes first. A carburettor set against a weak spark is set wrong twice.

The problem, as it appears
It starts, and it will not idle. It stumbles as you open the throttle, then pulls perfectly well once it is properly moving. Or it idles happily and dies the moment you ask for anything.
The instinct is the mixture screw, because it is the adjustment that is visible.
Why adjusting first disappoints
Because the symptom pattern is telling you about a passage, not a setting.
A carburettor is not one circuit. It is several, each drilled for a different part of the throttle range, and they are dramatically different sizes. The idle and low-speed drillings are the smallest — small enough that the residue left behind by evaporating fuel closes them long before it affects anything else.
That is why the classic after-storage fault is confined to one end of the range: bad at idle, worse just off idle, and entirely normal at larger throttle openings where a much bigger passage is doing the work. An engine misbehaving everywhere is pointing somewhere else — fuel level, an air leak, or ignition.
Reading that pattern before touching anything is most of the diagnosis, and it costs nothing.

What actually matters
The jet size is the calibration
The single irreversible mistake in this job, and it is committed with good intentions.
A jet's hole diameter is what meters the fuel through that circuit. Clearing it with a wire, a pin or a drill removes the blockage and changes the number at the same time — permanently richer, on a part you cannot un-drill. Nothing downstream corrects it.
Solvent, patience and compressed air, in that order. If a passage will not clear, the answer is a new jet, not a bigger one.
Fuel level sets everything at once
Easy to miss because it is not a jet and not a screw.
Every circuit draws from the same bowl, so the height of fuel in that bowl shifts the mixture across the whole range together. A needle valve that no longer seals, or a float that has absorbed fuel and sits lower than it should, makes the carburettor rich everywhere — and no amount of screw adjustment puts that back.
Check it before chasing individual circuits, because a wrong level makes every other measurement misleading.
The small parts are the ones you lose
Jets, needles, springs, tiny check balls and a screw that is not the same length as its neighbours. They come out in an order and they go back in the same one.

Ignition comes before mixture, without exception
This is the ordering that separates a tune from a fortnight of frustration.
Mixture adjustment is done by feel or by gauge against how the engine responds. If the spark is weak, mistimed, or arriving unevenly, the engine responds badly for reasons the carburettor cannot fix — so you adjust until the symptoms are least bad, which means setting the mixture wrong to partly cancel an ignition fault.
Fix the ignition and the engine now runs badly in a new way, because the compensation is still dialled in. Two faults have become two different faults.

Tune to the gauge, not to the ear
Manifold vacuum responds to mixture, and the useful setting is the one giving the highest steady reading at idle — then reset the idle speed, because improving the mixture usually raises it.
An ear gets close. A gauge gets there and holds still while you check, which matters because the adjustment interacts with idle speed and you will go round the loop more than once.

An air leak looks exactly like a lean setting
Worth naming because it sends people round in circles after a rebuild.
Anything drawing air downstream of the carburettor — a disturbed manifold gasket, a perished vacuum hose, the carburettor's own base gasket — leans the mixture in a way the screws are then used to correct. The engine ends up running on a rich setting to cancel an unmetered air path.
A rebuild is the most likely time to introduce one, since gaskets that were sealing get disturbed. If behaviour changed for the worse right after reassembly, look there before re-adjusting.
It comes back unless the fuel changes
The residue that closed the passages came from fuel left to evaporate. Clean the carburettor, store the car the same way, and you have bought a season.

The order to work in
- Note where in the throttle range it misbehaves. That is the diagnosis.
- Sort the ignition — timing, plugs, contacts. Nothing before this.
- Check fuel level and the needle valve.
- Strip and clean, solvent and air only, jets never opened out.
- New gaskets on reassembly. They do not survive disturbance.
- Set idle mixture to the highest steady vacuum, then reset idle speed.
- Re-check for air leaks if anything got worse after reassembly.
- Treat the fuel before it sits again.
The mistake to avoid
Ordering a rebuild kit before taking it apart. The kit is bought on the assumption that everything inside is worn, when the common fault is a passage full of residue and two gaskets that will not survive being disturbed. Stripping first tells you which of those parts you need — and replacing things that were fine adds opportunities to introduce a leak without removing the fault you had.
The second mistake is treating the carburettor as the cause because it is the adjustable part. An engine that will not idle has several possible reasons, and the carburettor is merely the one with screws on it.
