Convert if the car is driven, keep points if the car is judged — and in both cases carry the alternative in the boot.

The honest summary is narrower than either camp usually admits. Electronic ignition removes a service interval and a slow drift in timing. It does not make more power, it does not fix a worn distributor, and it trades a fault you can nurse home for one you generally cannot.

The short version

Dwell is the thing points lose

The gap between the contact faces sets dwell — how long the coil is connected and charging between sparks. Points erode because they switch current, the gap opens up as they wear, and dwell falls with it.

The consequence is not a dramatic failure. It is a car that was set up correctly in spring and is a little retarded and a little weak by autumn, changing slowly enough that the owner adapts to it. It is also the single most common reason a stored classic is reluctant on its first cold morning — which is why the first drive of the year checklist exists.

Electronic triggering has no wearing contact, so that drift does not happen.

The failure modes are opposite, and that is the real decision

Points give warning. Performance tails off, starting gets harder, and if they do fail on the road the recovery is genuinely a nail file, a feeler gauge and a screwdriver.

An electronic module tends to work perfectly and then not at all, with nothing to adjust. The mitigation is not clever: carry a spare module, or carry the original points and condenser and know how to swap them back.

That is why converting but keeping the old parts is the answer for most people who actually drive their classic any distance.

Neither fixes mechanical wear

If the distributor shaft has play, or the advance mechanism is seized, the spark timing scatters regardless of what triggers it. Fitting electronics to a worn distributor produces a clean, consistent signal into a sloppy mechanism.

Check for shaft play before spending anything. A vacuum gauge will also tell you a good deal about whether ignition is even the problem — the old-school engine diagnostic.

  • Driven regularly, distances, and you would rather not service the distributor → convert
  • Judged, concours, or originality is the point of the car → keep points
  • Driven far from home → convert, and carry the points
  • Runs badly and you have not diagnosed why → neither yet

A multimeter remains the more generally useful instrument either way, and is the tool that tells you whether the coil, the leads or the trigger is at fault before you replace any of them.

The mistake to avoid

Converting to fix a running problem you have not diagnosed. Electronic ignition solves exactly one thing: a mechanical switch that wears and drifts. If the car runs badly for any other reason — leads, coil, a vacuum leak, fuelling, a worn distributor — the conversion changes nothing and removes a variable you could previously check by eye.

The second mistake is throwing the points away. Reversibility is one of the better arguments for converting, and it stops being true the moment the old parts go in the bin. Put them in the boot with a spanner, where they are both a spare and an insurance policy — which is the same logic as the rest of roadside readiness on an older car.

If the shaft has play, neither trigger will hold timing steady, and fitting electronics to a worn distributor buys a tidier signal into the same mechanical scatter.

Questions people actually ask

What do contact points actually do?
They are a mechanical switch inside the distributor, opened by a cam on the shaft, that interrupts current through the coil and makes it fire. Because they are a switch carrying current, the faces erode and the gap changes as they wear — which is why they need periodic setting and eventually replacing.
Why does the gap drift matter?
The gap sets dwell, which is how long the coil is allowed to charge between sparks. As the gap widens with wear, dwell falls, and the spark gets weaker — so a car set up perfectly in spring is running slightly retarded and slightly weak by autumn, gradually enough that nobody notices until it will not start on a cold morning.
Is electronic ignition actually more powerful?
The trigger itself does not make a bigger spark. What it does is hold consistent dwell and timing indefinitely, so the ignition stops drifting between services. Some kits pair with a higher-output coil, and that is where a genuinely stronger spark comes from — not from the trigger.
Can a conversion be reversed?
Usually yes, and that is one of its better features. Most kits fit inside the existing distributor and the original points and condenser go back in with hand tools. Keep the old parts rather than throwing them away — reversibility is only real if you still have them.
Will it fix a car that runs badly?
Only if the reason it runs badly is worn or misadjusted points. It will not fix a worn distributor shaft, a tired coil, bad leads, a vacuum leak or fuelling. Diagnose first — an electronic module fitted to a mechanical problem changes nothing except the amount you have spent.
Do I still need a dwell meter afterwards?
Not for setting dwell, since there is nothing to set. A dwell meter that also reads engine speed is still useful for timing work, and a multimeter remains the more generally useful instrument to own either way.
