Mothballing an Engine for Multi-Year Storage

A four-month lay-up and a four-year one are different problems. What changes when the car will not be started, and the decision to make before anything else.

Decide first whether the car is genuinely being stored for years or merely being neglected for them. Everything below is preparation for a car that will not be started, and it is real work with a real recommissioning job at the far end. A car that could be driven every few weeks should be driven instead.

The problem, as it appears

A car is going away for longer than a season. A move, a project stalled, a house sale, an inheritance nobody has decided about yet.

The winter routine gets applied because it is the routine that exists — battery off, cover on, door shut. Three years later the engine turns over and something inside it is not what it was.

Why the seasonal routine disappoints here

Because it is built around a different assumption: that the car will run again soon.

Classic car winter storage is about the things that go wrong in four months, ordered by how likely each is, and it explicitly leaves fogging out as a technique for storage measured in years. That exclusion is correct for its scope, and this is the page on the other side of it.

The difference that matters is corrosion of bare internal metal. Cylinder walls are wiped clean by the rings on the last stroke the engine ever turned. Over a season, in a reasonably dry building, that is survivable. Over years, in a garage that cycles temperature and humidity daily, it is the thing that turns storage into a rebuild.

What actually matters

The fuel decision comes first

There are two defensible approaches and the wrong part is not choosing.

Stabilised and full. A full tank leaves little air for moisture to condense out of, which protects the tank internals. Stabiliser slows the degradation of the fuel itself — but it has a stated shelf life, not an indefinite one, and a multi-year plan may outlast it.

Drained and dry. No stale fuel, no gum in the carburettor or injectors, and no ethanol sitting against anything. The cost is bare dry surfaces inside the tank and fuel system.

Ethanol-blended fuel makes both worse — it attracts moisture and it is unkind to older rubber and some metals. What it does over a long lay-up is covered in ethanol and stale fuel in classic storage.

Fogging protects the surfaces nothing else reaches

The point of fogging oil is to leave a film on cylinder walls, valves and bores that does not drain away.

The general principle is to introduce it so the engine distributes it internally, then stop the engine and seal the openings so damp air is not drawn through the intake and exhaust for the next three years. The specifics differ by engine — carburetted and injected engines are not the same procedure, and diesel is different again — so this is a case for the manual rather than a generic instruction.

Change the oil before storage rather than after. Used oil carries acidic combustion products, and leaving those sitting against bearing surfaces for years is the avoidable half of this.

Humidity is the variable that decides everything else

Corrosion needs moisture. The single most useful thing about the storage location is how damp it is, and that is measurable rather than guessable.

A desiccant unit is worth having in a closed car, and the same argument that applies to the garage applies inside the cabin — where trapped moisture also ruins trim, carpet and electrics.

Do not seal the car airtight. A cover has to shed moisture rather than trap it against paint, which is the whole argument in covering a car without trapping moisture.

Accept what you cannot preserve

Some things are consumed by time rather than by use, and planning around that is cheaper than fighting it.

  • Tyres. Flat spots and rubber ageing. Budget for replacement; take the weight off to protect suspension and wheels rather than to save the tyres.
  • Battery. Remove it. A discharged lead-acid battery freezes at a temperature a garage reaches, and years of self-discharge is not something a maintainer fixes if there is no power.
  • Rubber and flexible hoses. Perish on a clock. Inspect at recommissioning rather than trusting them.
  • Brake fluid. Hygroscopic. It will need replacing.

Write down what you did

The car will be recommissioned by someone — possibly you, several years and one house move later, and possibly not you at all.

A note taped inside the car saying the engine is fogged, the fuel is drained or stabilised, and the intake is blocked is worth an enormous amount at the far end. It also belongs with the rest of the paperwork argument in documenting a classic for insurance and value.

The mistake to avoid

Starting it occasionally to "keep it healthy". This is the most common and most damaging middle option. A brief run does not get the engine hot enough to drive off the water and fuel that combustion puts into the oil, so it introduces contamination and then shuts down before removing any of it — and it also washes off exactly the protective film that fogging was for.

Either drive it properly and regularly, or store it properly and leave it alone. The thing that damages engines is the compromise between those.

The second mistake is treating this as the default for any long absence. Preparation is a day's work and recommissioning is more, so if the car can plausibly be driven every few weeks, that is both cheaper and better for it than any storage regime on this page.

Questions people actually ask

How is this different from winter storage?
Seasonal storage assumes the car will be started again in a few months, so the work is about preventing predictable short-term damage. Multi-year storage assumes it will not, which changes the whole approach — you are protecting bare internal metal from corrosion over a period long enough for it to matter, and accepting a recommissioning job at the far end.
What does fogging actually do?
It coats the inside of the cylinders, valves and bores with an oil film that stays put. Cylinder walls are bare metal wiped clean by the rings, and over years in a damp building that surface corrodes — which is what turns a stored engine into a rebuilt one. It is a technique for years, not for a season.
Should the fuel be drained or stabilised?
That is the decision to make first, and it depends on the system. Stabilised fuel in a full tank limits condensation and internal rust, but stabiliser has a stated shelf life rather than an indefinite one. Draining avoids stale fuel and gum but leaves surfaces dry and exposed. Modern ethanol-blended fuel makes this worse in both directions.
What about the tyres over several years?
They will develop flat spots and the rubber ages regardless of use, so plan on replacing them rather than preserving them. Taking the weight off the tyres protects the suspension and the wheels more than it saves the tyres, and rubber has a service life measured from manufacture.
Does the battery stay in the car?
Not for years. A battery left connected will discharge, and a discharged lead-acid battery is damaged by freezing at a temperature a garage genuinely reaches. Remove it, or keep it on a maintainer if there is power — and expect to replace it at the far end regardless.
Is this actually worth doing?
Only if the alternative is genuinely storing the car for years. Preparation costs a day and recommissioning costs more, so a car that could be driven occasionally instead should be — running an engine monthly is not a substitute for either approach, and it is the middle option that causes the most damage.
