Cleaning a Mechanical Keyboard Without Damage

Keycaps come off, switches mostly should not. A wire puller and a photograph are the two things that make this safe to do on a Sunday.

Take the caps off, clean underneath, wash them, and let them dry properly. That is the whole job, and the two things that make it go wrong are a plastic puller marking the caps and reassembling from memory after the stabilised keys came off.

The problem, as it appears

Keys that feel gritty, a board with visible debris between the caps, and one or two keys that have started to feel different from the rest. On a board used daily it is dust, skin and whatever has been eaten near it.

Surface cleaning does not reach it. The debris is under the caps, sitting on the plate, and nothing applied from above shifts what is below.

Why cleaning around the keys disappoints

Because everything falls back in. Blowing air across a fitted keyboard moves debris from between the caps into the space under them, which is where it was heading anyway. It looks better for a week.

The other reason is that the gritty feel comes from debris in or around the switch housing, and no amount of surface work reaches it. The caps have to come off, which is easy, and that is the step people avoid because it looks like disassembly.

What actually matters

A photograph before anything comes off. Layouts vary, modifier rows differ between boards, and reassembling from memory is where an afternoon disappears. Take the picture.

A wire puller rather than a plastic ring. Wire hooks lift from under opposite corners and pull straight up. Plastic ring pullers grip the sides of the cap and can leave marks, especially on softer caps.

Pulling vertically. Angled pulls put lateral load on the switch stem, and stems are the part that snaps. Straight up, evenly.

Stabilised keys treated separately. Space bar, shift, enter and backspace sit on wire stabilisers that unclip in a particular way and go back in a particular way. Do these last, photograph the underside, and take time.

The options, and who each suits

A wire keycap puller suits everyone doing this, and the combined puller sets that include a switch puller are barely more expensive. The switch end is for repairs rather than cleaning, and it is worth having when needed.

An electric duster suits clearing the exposed plate once the caps are off, which is the moment the debris is actually reachable. The same unit that cleans a PC handles this.

Cleaning gel suits the gaps on a board you would rather not fully disassemble, and the caps themselves. Use a firm one briefly — soft cheap gels leave residue, and residue inside a switch housing is worse than the dust.

Warm water and mild soap suits the caps and costs nothing. Bowl, rinse, dry thoroughly.

The mistake to avoid

Refitting caps before they are completely dry. Water sits inside the stem cavity where it is not visible and does not evaporate quickly, and a cap refitted with water inside delivers it directly onto the switch contacts. Overnight at minimum, and shake each one out before it goes back.

The second mistake is removing switches when the goal is cleaning. Caps expose everything a clean needs. Switch removal is for replacement, it requires a hot-swap board or desoldering, and on a soldered board an afternoon's cleaning becomes a repair project. Questions people actually ask

Should you remove the switches to clean a keyboard?
Not for cleaning. Keycaps come off easily and expose almost everything that needs attention. Switch removal is for replacement or repair, and on a soldered board it means desoldering.
Is cleaning gel safe on a keyboard?
On caps and in the gaps, generally yes if it is a firm gel used briefly. Cheap soft ones leave residue in switch housings, and residue where a stem travels is worse than the dust it removed.
Can keycaps go in a dishwasher?
ABS caps can deform and legends can lift at dishwasher temperatures. Warm water in a bowl is safer, takes ten minutes, and avoids the one outcome that cannot be undone.
How long do keycaps take to dry?
Longer than they look. Water sits inside the stem cavity and does not evaporate quickly — leave them overnight at minimum, and shake each one out before refitting.
