Your eyes adapt to whatever dominates your field of view, and the screen is one bright object in a room full of other light — so matching the screen to the room does less work than matching the room to itself.
Which is why the setting people turn on often disappoints: it changes the smaller of the two variables and leaves the mismatch in place.

The problem, as it appears
At about nine in the evening the monitor starts to look blue. Not dramatically — just cold, and slightly harsh, in a way it did not at two in the afternoon.
Nothing about the screen changed. What changed is that daylight went away and the room is now lit by warm lamps, so the screen is the only cool light source in your field of view and your eyes have adapted around it.
Why the night-mode toggle disappoints
Two reasons, and the second is more useful than the first.
It is oversold as a sleep intervention. The evidence that colour filters meaningfully improve sleep is considerably weaker than the number of tools implementing them suggests. Two other factors have much better support: how bright the screen is, and how late you use it. A dim screen at a sensible hour does more than a warm filter on a bright screen at two in the morning.
It addresses one object, not the scene. Warming the screen while the room is a mix of cool ceiling light and warm lamps moves the mismatch rather than removing it. Your eyes still have two references to reconcile.
There is also a practical failure: default transitions are frequently abrupt enough to notice, and a noticeable shift mid-sentence is annoying, which is why a lot of people enable these tools once and turn them off within a week.
What actually matters
Match the room to itself first
The unglamorous foundation, and it does more than any screen setting.
A room with one warm lamp, one cool ceiling fitting and daylight through a window gives your eyes three references. Nothing looks right because there is no consistent white to adapt to, and the screen gets blamed because it is the brightest thing in the scene.
Getting the room's own lights to roughly agree — all warm in the evening, all neutral during the day — resolves more than any monitor adjustment. It also costs nothing if the bulbs are already right and are simply being mixed.
Then the light immediately behind the screen
The highest-value lighting change on a desk, and the one most often skipped.
In a dim room, a bright screen against a dark wall is the highest-contrast thing your eye deals with, and that contrast is what tires it. A light behind the monitor lifts the background and shrinks the difference.
Its colour temperature has to match the screen. A bias light noticeably warmer or cooler than the display makes the screen look tinted, which is worse than no bias light at all — the whole point is to give the eye a consistent reference.

Light the desk, not the screen
The second half, and the one that separates a comfortable desk from a dim one.

Make the whole room shift, not just the screen
If the room's lighting can change colour temperature through the evening, that is the version of this idea that works — because it moves everything together and your eyes never have two references.

Slow the transition down
A small change that decides whether any of this survives past the first week.
Most automatic modes shift over a short window and it is perceptible. Stretching the transition across an hour or more makes it genuinely invisible while achieving exactly the same end state — and a change you do not notice is one you do not turn off.
Turn it all off for colour work
The exception, stated plainly.
Any automatic shift changes the colours you are judging, so photo, video and design work needs it disabled. The correct substitute is not a different setting but consistent room lighting, which is harder and considerably more useful.

Brightness is still the bigger lever
Worth repeating at the end because it gets lost.
Of everything on this page, screen brightness relative to the room does the most for comfort and has the best evidence behind it for the sleep question too. A screen at daytime brightness in a dark room is uncomfortable regardless of its colour temperature.
If you do one thing, make the brightness follow the room. The colour shift is the refinement.
The order to work in
- Make the room's own lights agree with each other.
- Turn the screen brightness down in the evening. Biggest single lever.
- Add a bias light behind the monitor, matched to the screen's temperature.
- Light the desk without lighting the screen, if you read on paper.
- Enable the automatic shift, and extend its transition to an hour or more.
- Disable all of it for colour-critical work, and fix the room lighting instead.
The mistake to avoid
Treating the night-mode toggle as a sleep intervention. It is the most visible option, the least well-supported, and turning it on tends to end the enquiry — so the screen stays bright and the session stays late, which are the two variables that had evidence behind them. Use it because a warm screen in a warm room is more comfortable, which is true and sufficient.
The second mistake is warming the screen and leaving the room alone. The screen is one object; the room is everything else in your visual field, and your eyes adapt to the dominant reference. Shifting only the screen relocates the mismatch instead of removing it, which is why people report that these tools "do not really work" — the setting did what it said, and the larger half of the problem was never touched.
