A dock if the handheld regularly connects to a television at home; a travel adapter if it connects to whatever screen is in the room you happen to be in. The deciding factor is not features but whether the setup is permanent — and if your monitor has USB-C, you may need neither.

Where the money actually goes

The dock is buying a permanent position — a stand that holds the device, ports that stay connected, and a power supply that keeps it charged while it plays. That combination is what makes a handheld usable as a small console, and it is genuinely convenient.

The adapter is buying portability, and gives up almost everything else to get it. One or two ports, no stand, and it borrows the handheld's own charger — which means if you want power and video at once, the adapter needs passthrough and many do not.

Neither is buying performance. This is worth stating because docks are marketed alongside performance language. Output to a larger display at a higher resolution generally makes a handheld work harder for the same result.

Where the cheaper option is genuinely enough

  • Travel. A dock plus its power supply is a substantial thing to pack; an adapter is not.
  • Occasional use. If the external screen happens twice a month, the dock's convenience has little to amortise against.
  • A monitor with USB-C. Frequently neither product is needed at all.
  • Video only. If the session is short enough that battery is not a constraint, passthrough stops mattering.

Where the cheaper option falls short

  • Long sessions. Without adequate passthrough the battery drains while playing, which is the whole problem charging a handheld properly describes.
  • Wired networking. Adapters rarely include ethernet, and a handheld on a television is exactly where a wired connection helps.
  • Keyboard and mouse. Desktop-mode work needs ports an adapter does not have.
  • Somewhere to put the device. An adapter leaves the handheld lying on its screen.

The decision, plainly

  • Permanent television or monitor setup at home → dock, with passthrough matched to the draw.
  • Travelling, occasional external screens → adapter.
  • Monitor supports USB-C with power delivery → just a cable.
  • Desktop-mode work with keyboard and mouse → dock, for the ports.

Questions people actually ask

Does a handheld dock improve performance?
No. It changes where the picture goes and, with adequate power passthrough, removes the battery as a constraint. The device performs the same, and an external display at a higher resolution may make it perform worse.
Why does my handheld lose charge while docked?
Because the dock's power passthrough is lower than the device draws under load. It is the same arithmetic as any charger — the shortfall comes from the battery even though it is connected.
Can a cheap adapter run a TV at high refresh rate?
Often not. Resolution and refresh rate are frequently quoted separately in a way that implies they combine when they do not, and this is the most common disappointment with inexpensive adapters.
Is a dock worth it for a monitor that has USB-C?
Usually not. A monitor supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode with power delivery does both jobs over one cable, and that is simpler and cheaper than adding a dock in between.
