If you already trust a jump pack, or you inflate tyres often, separates are better tools.

Why the compressor gets the short straw

These units are designed around jump starting. The internal battery, the case size and the cooling are specified for delivering a very large current for a few seconds. The compressor is then fitted into whatever space and power budget is left over.

That produces a pump that is physically smaller, thermally more limited and slower to fill than a dedicated inflator occupying the same volume. It will get a soft tyre up to pressure. The shared battery is the real trade

Both functions draw on the same cells. Spend five minutes inflating a tyre and there is less in reserve for starting the engine — which is a genuine problem if the reason you stopped was a soft tyre and the reason you cannot leave is a flat battery.

Separates do not share that budget. A 12V compressor running off the car's own battery does not touch the jump pack at all, which is the strongest practical argument for two items over one.

What decides it either way

Being charged beats being specified. The commonest failure of any of these is having sat in a boot for two years and being flat when needed. Whatever you buy, the reminder to top it up every few months matters more than the peak current figure.

Peak amps are not comparable across brands. Manufacturers define the number differently and measure it under conditions unrelated to cranking a cold engine. Treat it as a rough class, not a spec to compare precisely.
