Finding Parts for a Car Nobody Stocks

The part exists more often than the catalogue suggests. How to identify what you actually need, and the four places worth looking once the obvious one has failed.

The part usually exists. What has failed is the search, not the supply. Most parts that "cannot be found" are being looked for by description, on the car maker's number, in one place — and are sitting in current production under a component supplier's number.

The problem, as it appears

Something has failed on a car old enough that the usual sources shrug. The main factor's system returns nothing, the marketplace listings are for something that looks similar, and the one specialist who lists it wants a sum that seems disproportionate to a rubber bush.

The reasonable conclusion is that the part is unobtainable. It usually is not.

Why searching by description disappoints

Because a description is not an identifier, and the parts world runs on identifiers.

"Front lower control arm bush, 1987 saloon" returns things that resemble the picture in your head. The number stamped into the component returns the component. Those are entirely different searches and only one of them is reliable.

The second reason is that car makers did not make most of these parts. Bearings, seals, pumps, electrical components and fasteners came from component suppliers who sold the same item to several manufacturers, under their own numbering. Searching the car maker's number searches a discontinued catalogue. Searching the supplier's number searches current production.

What actually matters

Get a number off the part before anything else

This is the step that converts a difficult search into an easy one, and it is skipped because the number is rarely somewhere convenient.

Cast and moulded components carry numbers that are dirty, upside down, or facing the bulkhead. Clean the area and look at it properly with a mirror and a light rather than assuming there is nothing there.

Failing that, an original parts catalogue for the model gives the manufacturer's number, which is the thing to cross-reference from.

Cross-reference to the component supplier

Once you have any number, search it directly rather than searching for the car. Supplier catalogues, bearing and seal dimension tables, and interchange listings will frequently show the same item under several numbers, still in production, listed against vehicles you would never have connected to yours.

This is where the price difference lives. The identical bearing is routinely a fraction of the price under its own number rather than as a boxed part for a classic.

When there is no number, measure

Plain mechanical items — bushes, bearings, seals, spacers, fasteners — are specified by dimension, and a dimension is something you can obtain from the old part even when nothing is legible.

Bearings and oil seals in particular are catalogued by bore, outside diameter and width, so three measurements often identify a current part exactly.

Owners' clubs know things no catalogue does

A club that has existed for decades has accumulated exactly the knowledge this problem needs: which parts interchange with what, which reproductions are poor, who is remanufacturing, and which supplier has quietly become the only one.

That information is not derivable from a catalogue and it is generally offered freely. For a car with thin supply it is the single highest-value source, and it is the one people try last.

Keep the old part, however broken

Two reasons, and both come up more often than expected. A physical sample lets a supplier confirm a match, and for simple mechanical parts a machine shop can reproduce one — which is a real option for brackets, bushes and spacers rather than an exotic one.

The corollary is worth acting on: when a difficult consumable is available, buy spares. The moment to find a scarce seal is not while the car is in pieces waiting for it.

The four places worth looking, in order

  1. The component supplier's number. Highest hit rate, lowest price, and the step most people skip.
  2. The owners' club. Interchange knowledge, current remanufacturers, and warnings about specific reproductions.
  3. Specialists for the marque. More expensive, and they carry the things nobody else does. Worth it for model-specific parts that were never supplied by anyone else.
  4. Used and salvage. The answer for trim, castings and body parts that were never remanufactured and never will be.

Having something made sits below all four, and above giving up.

The mistake to avoid

Buying a part that looks right from a listing that does not give a number. A photograph of a similar bush is not a match, and the cost of finding out is the second time you take the assembly apart. If a listing cannot tell you what the part is, it does not know either.

The second mistake is treating scarcity as permanent. Remanufacturing comes and goes — a part that was unobtainable three years ago may be back in production because someone judged there was demand, and a club will know that where a search engine will not. It is also worth checking before a job rather than during one, which is the same argument as the first drive of the year checklist: the time to discover you need something is not the moment the car is immobile.

Questions people actually ask

Where do I find the part number?
On the part itself, most of the time, and it is worth looking properly before searching for a description. Are owners' clubs actually useful for parts?
They are frequently the most useful source there is, and not only for stock. A club that has existed for decades has accumulated knowledge about which parts interchange, which reproductions are poor, and who is currently remanufacturing what. That information does not exist in any catalogue and is difficult to derive independently.
How do I judge a reproduction part?
With more scepticism than a new part for a current car, and by asking what it is made of rather than what it is called. Reproduction rubber and trim vary enormously in quality between suppliers of the same item, and the failure usually shows up in a year or two rather than immediately. Club forums are where this is actually documented.
What if the part genuinely does not exist any more?
Then the options are a used one, a repair, or having it made — and the third is more accessible than it sounds for simple mechanical parts. A machine shop can reproduce a bracket or a bush from the original, which is why keeping the broken one matters even when it looks beyond saving.
Should I buy spares when I see them?
For a car with genuinely thin supply, yes, and it is the one piece of hoarding advice worth taking. Consumables that are known to be difficult and are known to fail — specific seals, trim clips, a discontinued sensor — are worth having on a shelf, because the time to find them is not when the car is in pieces.
