Powerline vs Mesh vs Ethernet for Gaming
Three ways to reach a room the router cannot serve. One is predictable, one depends on your wiring, and one depends on where you can put a box.

Ethernet if you can run the cable — it is the only one of the three whose performance you can predict before buying it. Powerline if you cannot run a cable and the wiring cooperates, which is not knowable in advance. Mesh if you cannot run a cable and there is a good position for a node.

The short version
Cable can be run, even awkwardly → ethernet, and stop reading. Cable cannot be run, machine one or two rooms away with a clear position between → mesh. Cable cannot be run, no good node position, same ring main → powerline, bought somewhere that accepts returns.

The highlighted column is the one to choose whenever it is physically possible, which is the honest answer even though it is the least convenient.
Where the money actually goes
Ethernet buys predictability, and that is the whole proposition. It is unaffected by neighbours, by microwaves, by what the house wiring looks like, and by where anyone puts furniture. A cable and a small switch cost less than either alternative.
Powerline buys a wired path without routing a cable, and pays for it with total dependence on an unknown — the building's electrical installation. Same ring main and a modern install can perform very well. Across a consumer unit, or with a noisy appliance on the same circuit, it can be worse than the Wi-Fi it replaced. Nothing about the packaging predicts which you have.
Mesh buys coverage, and remains wireless. That matters for the specific complaint here, because a wireless hop keeps every property that caused the original problem — interference, congestion, retransmission — and simply moves the antenna closer.
Where the awkward option is genuinely enough
- A run that can hide under a carpet edge or along a skirting board. Flat cable exists for this and is far less visible than people expect.
- A single room away. Frequently a short run through one doorway.
- Rented accommodation. Cable clips and flat cable leave no permanent marks and come with you.
- More than one wired device at the far end. A single run plus a small switch serves a console, a PC and a capture setup.

Where the awkward option falls short
- Load-bearing walls, listed buildings, or a landlord who will not have it.
- Runs across doorways in daily use, where even flat cable becomes a trip hazard.
- Multiple rooms needing coverage, which is what mesh is genuinely for.
The decision, plainly
- Can run a cable, at all, in any form → ethernet.
- Cannot run a cable, one or two rooms away, clear position between → mesh node, mounted properly.
- Cannot run a cable, no node position, same ring main → powerline, on a returns policy.
- Whole house needs coverage rather than one machine → mesh, on its actual merits.
- Ping to the router is already clean → none of these; the fault is upstream.

- Costs nothing, is frequently the largest single improvement available, and is skipped because the router was installed where the cable entered the building.
- A USB adapter on an extension lead
- If the machine's internal antenna is buried in a steel case under a desk, relocating the antenna into open air can resolve the problem outright.
