An unmanaged gigabit switch in a fanless metal case. It turns one Ethernet run into eight, and the absence of a fan is why it can live on a desk.

This is the correct answer to a narrow and very common problem, and it is close to the cheapest correct answer available. The specification that decides whether it belongs on a desk rather than in a cupboard is that it has no fan.

The problem it addresses
Getting one Ethernet cable to a room is work — clips, a doorway crossing, a route along a skirting board. Getting four cables there is four times the work and it looks like it.
But the far end almost never has one device. It has a PC, a console, a TV, and increasingly a NAS or a capture box. The switch is what makes one run serve all of them, which is exactly the role running Ethernet around a room assigns it: do the hard part once, then fan out at the destination.

Why fanless is a specification and not a detail
A network switch is a box that runs permanently. If it has a fan, that fan runs permanently too, in the same room as the person the switch was bought for.
This site spends a whole category on making a PC quieter, and there is no sense in silencing a tower and then adding a small continuously-spinning fan two feet away. Passive cooling is why this can sit on the desk, behind the monitor, or on the shelf under it — anywhere convenient, rather than banished somewhere with a spare socket.
The metal case is what makes passive cooling work, which is why the enclosure material is listed as a specification rather than a finish.

Ugly score 5, and it earns it
A small black or white metal box with eight lit ports and a wall wart. It is inoffensive and it is never the object that spoils a desk — what spoils the desk is the eight cables now converging on it, which is a consequence of the switch rather than the switch itself.
That bundle is worth planning for at installation rather than discovering. Everything in hiding desk cables without blocking upgrades applies with more force once there is a switch in the middle of it.
Where it stops being the right tool
The silent downgrade
This is the limitation worth knowing because it will eventually cost someone an evening. Gigabit Ethernet uses all four wire pairs; 100 Mbps uses two. A cable that has lost a conductor does not fail — it negotiates down to 100 Mbps and keeps working, and the link light on the switch looks exactly the same.
The switch cannot tell you this. The operating system can, in one reading, and the method is in finding the bad Ethernet cable. Check there before blaming the switch or the router.
One device does not need it
A switch at a far end serving a single PC is a box, a power supply and a hop achieving nothing the cable was not already doing. The value is entirely in the fan-out.
Multi-gig and PoE are different products
If the network is already 2.5 GbE, or if the far end is an access point or a camera wanting power over the cable, this is the wrong model. TP-Link sells both variants under closely similar names, so read the suffix rather than the family.

Who should buy it, and who should not
Buy it if a single Ethernet run has to serve more than one device, which describes most rooms that have had a cable run to them at all. It is one of those purchases where the correct product is also the cheap one and there is very little to decide.

Yes, with no real reservation. It is a component rather than a product: it does one thing, it does it silently, and the only interesting decision it presents is remembering to check the model suffix.
