Running Ethernet Around a Room Neatly

A cable run does not have to look like an installation. Flat cable, clips and a small switch turn a wireless problem into a solved one for very little.

A cable run is the one network fix whose result you can predict before buying anything, and it does not have to look like an installation. Flat cable along a skirting line, a handful of clips and a small switch at the far end is an afternoon and very little money.

The problem, as it appears

The router is where the line enters the building, the machine is somewhere else entirely, and the wireless link between them is unreliable. The obvious fix is a cable, and the reason people do not do it is aesthetic — a lime-green cable stapled diagonally across a wall is worse than the problem.

That reaction is reasonable and the conclusion is wrong. A run following the lines a room already has is close to invisible, and almost nobody who has not done it expects that.

Why running it loosely disappoints

Draping a long cable around the edge of a room and leaving it works for about a week. Then it gets caught by a chair wheel, pulled at a connector, walked on at a doorway, and eventually either the clip on the plug snaps or the connection goes intermittent.

The failure is always at the ends. A cable dragged repeatedly puts load on the plug and the socket, and the retaining clip is a small piece of plastic. Nearly all of the effort in doing this properly is about making sure force never reaches the connectors.

What actually matters

That the ends are secured. Fix the cable close to each plug so any pull is taken by the wall rather than the connector. This single step accounts for most of the difference between a run that lasts and one that goes intermittent.

That it follows an existing line. Skirting tops, architrave edges and the junction between wall and ceiling are lines the eye already accepts. A cable on one of them disappears. The same cable across open wall is the thing people were afraid of.

Slack at the desk end. A service loop means the machine can be pulled out without unplugging anything, which is the difference between a run you can live with and one you resent.

Where it crosses a doorway. Under the door on flat cable if the clearance exists, over the frame if not. Across the threshold on the floor is how cables get destroyed and people get tripped.

The options, and who each suits

Flat cable suits nearly every domestic run. It goes under a door, under a rug edge, and sits against a skirting board far more discreetly than round cable. The performance difference at these lengths is not something anyone will notice.

Clips suit the fixing job, and the choice between nail-in and adhesive is mostly about the surface. Nail-in holds indefinitely and leaves a pin hole. Adhesive suits surfaces you cannot pin, and its failure mode on emulsion is taking paint with it.

A small unmanaged switch suits any far end with more than one device. One run then serves a PC, a console and anything else, and an unmanaged switch requires no configuration whatsoever — plug things in and they work.

A raceway suits a run that has to cross open wall with no line to follow, or a rented room where pins are not acceptable. It is plastic trunking and it looks like plastic trunking — but it is the option that makes an unavoidable open-wall crossing safe and tidy.

The mistake to avoid

Running the cable across a doorway threshold. It gets stepped on, caught by doors, and pulled at both ends every time. Go under the door with flat cable if there is clearance, or up and over the frame if there is not — both take a few extra minutes and both last indefinitely.

The second mistake is buying exactly the measured length. Cable is inexpensive and the measurement is always short, because a route around a room is much longer than the straight line across it. Questions people actually ask

Is flat ethernet cable slower than round?
Not meaningfully at the lengths involved in a home. Flat cable exists so it can pass under a door or a rug, and that convenience is worth far more than any theoretical margin it gives up over a run of a few metres.
Can ethernet cable run under a carpet?
Along the edge, under the carpet gripper line, yes. Across the middle of a walked-on floor, no — repeated compression eventually deforms the conductors, and it is a trip hazard while it lasts.
Do adhesive cable clips damage paint?
Removing them can, on emulsion especially. Nail-in clips are actually kinder to a wall than adhesive, because a pin hole is easier to fill than a patch of pulled-off paint.
Does a cheap unmanaged switch add latency?
Nothing you could perceive. An unmanaged switch forwards frames in microseconds. This is one of the few places where the cheapest option is genuinely equivalent to the expensive one for home use.
