Chrome Pitting: What Can and Cannot Be Saved
Pitting means the plating has already been breached, so polishing is working on the wrong layer. How to tell staining from pitting before spending anything.

Run a fingernail across it before buying anything. Smooth means staining, and staining comes off. Catching means pitting, and pitting is a hole in the plating that no polish can fill — polishing it makes the bare area larger.

The problem, as it appears
Bumpers, trim, a mirror surround or a bezel that used to be bright and now has a scatter of dark specks across it, or a dulled patch that will not come back.
The instinct is that it needs polishing harder, or a stronger product. On genuinely pitted chrome that instinct removes what is left.
Why polishing disappoints here
Because polishing is an abrasive process and chrome plating is extremely thin.
The bright layer people call chrome is measured in microns, and it sits on top of nickel, which is the layer actually doing the corrosion resistance. Work at a pit with an abrasive and you are not filling anything — you are thinning the plating around it until more base metal is exposed.
So the result of attacking pitting with polish is a wider dull area and a surface that deteriorates faster than before, because there is less plating left to protect it.
There is a second reason worth knowing: many pits do not start from the outside. Chrome is porous, moisture reaches the steel underneath, and corrosion works outward from beneath, lifting the plating. Nothing applied to the surface reaches that.
What actually matters
The fingernail test decides everything
Before any product, run a nail lightly across the affected area.
- Smooth, no catch → the plating is intact and the problem is on top of it. Cleanable.
- Catches, or feels rough → the plating is breached. Not recoverable by cleaning.
That one test separates a twenty-minute job from a decision about money, and it costs nothing.
Iron specks are not pitting
Fine orange or brown specks on otherwise bright chrome are frequently airborne iron contamination sitting on the surface — brake dust and rail dust — rather than the plating failing.
Those often release with a dedicated cleaner and no abrasion at all. Test somewhere hidden, and stop immediately if anything catches a nail.
On intact plating, the gentlest thing that works
Where the surface is sound, the goal is the least aggressive product that shifts the contamination, and light pressure with plenty of lubrication.
One important restriction applies to a good deal of car brightwork: some metal polishes are explicitly not for plated or coated surfaces, and car chrome is plated. That constraint is recorded on our Flitz entry and it is easy to miss on a label.

Much modern brightwork is not chrome at all — it is anodised aluminium or a coated plastic, and it needs a different approach entirely. That distinction is made in cleaning windshield molding without scratching chrome.

On pitted chrome, the goal changes to arrest
Once plating is breached, there is no cleaning outcome that restores it. What remains available is slowing further loss, which is a legitimate and worthwhile aim on a part you do not intend to re-plate.
That means gentle cleaning, thorough drying, and keeping a protective film over the area so moisture is not sitting on exposed steel. It is maintenance rather than repair, and describing it as anything else is how people end up disappointed.
Re-plating, and when replacement beats it
Re-plating is not a coating job. The part is stripped, the base metal repaired, and multiple layers applied — copper, nickel, then chrome — which is why it is priced the way it is.
It earns its cost when the part is not reproduced, when it is prominent, and when the car justifies the spend. Where a good reproduction exists, replacement is frequently cheaper than restoration, and finding out which applies is a sourcing question — finding parts for a car nobody stocks.
Whichever route, photograph the part before it leaves. That belongs with the rest of the documentation argument.
Prevention is mostly about moisture and time
Pitting is corrosion, and corrosion needs moisture and time. A car stored damp accumulates both.

The mistake to avoid
Polishing harder when the first attempt did not work. On stained chrome, the first attempt usually does work, and its failure is information — it means you are not looking at staining. Escalating pressure or abrasiveness at that point removes plating that is still doing a job, and turns a cosmetically marked part into a failing one.
The second mistake is using a metal polish on brightwork without checking what the brightwork is. Plated, anodised and coated surfaces all look similar under a light film of dirt, and products formulated for solid metal can permanently dull a plated or anodised finish in a single pass.
