Is Your Gaming Room Too Hot for Your PC?
Every cooler works from ambient upward, so a warm room raises every temperature in the case. How to find out cheaply, and what actually helps once you know.

Every cooler in a PC works on the difference between a component and the air around it, so the room is a floor under every temperature in the case. Before diagnosing a machine that "runs hot in summer", measure the room — it is the cheapest measurement available and it frequently explains the whole thing.

The problem, as it appears
A machine that behaved all winter starts throttling in July, or a setup in a converted loft runs consistently warmer than the same components would elsewhere. Nothing has changed inside the case.
The reason people miss this is that monitoring software reports component temperatures without reporting ambient. A CPU reading looks like a fact about the CPU, when a large part of it is a fact about the room — and without the second number the first one cannot be interpreted.
Why more case fans disappoint
Adding fans increases the rate at which room air is moved through the case. If the room air is already warm, faster delivery of warm air has a hard limit, and that limit is the room.
This is where a lot of money gets spent unproductively. A machine in a twenty-degree room and the same machine in a thirty-degree room are different thermal problems, and only one of them is solvable inside the case. Establishing which one you have costs the price of a thermometer.
What actually matters
Ambient, measured at the intake. Not the middle of the room and not the thermostat in the hall — the air the case is actually drawing, which in a corner behind a desk can be several degrees above the rest of the room.
Whether the machine is recirculating. A case with its exhaust close to a wall, or standing inside a desk cubby with a solid back, re-ingests its own hot output. The intake reading tells you this immediately: intake air well above room air means the machine is breathing its own exhaust.
Whether the room exchanges air at all. A closed room with a gaming PC, a monitor and a person in it is a meaningful heat source in a small space. Over a long session the room itself warms, and the machine's temperatures drift upward through the evening.
The delta, not the absolute. The useful figure is component temperature minus ambient. That number describes the cooling system and stays comparable across seasons, which is what makes it a diagnostic rather than a reading.
The options, and who each suits
A cheap temperature and humidity sensor placed at the intake suits anyone diagnosing this. It turns an argument into a number, and the number is what tells you whether to buy case fans or open a window. Accuracy to a degree or so is plenty — the comparison is what matters, not calibration.

Moving the case suits the recirculation case and costs nothing. Out of the corner, away from the wall, out of the enclosed cubby. Should a gaming PC sit on the floor covers the height question, which is a related but separate decision.
A desk fan suits stagnant air specifically — a case in an alcove or under a desk with poor circulation. It moves room air to the machine; it does not make the room cooler, and pointing one at a case in an already-ventilated room does very little.

Ventilating the room is the actual fix when ambient is genuinely high, and no PC accessory substitutes for it. An open window, a door left ajar, or extraction changes the floor that everything else sits on.
The mistake to avoid
Comparing your component temperatures to numbers posted by someone else without knowing their ambient. Almost every "is this temperature normal" discussion is missing the one variable that would make the comparison meaningful, and a reading that looks alarming against someone's air-conditioned basement may be entirely reasonable in a warm room.
The second mistake is measuring once. A single reading catches one moment; the interesting behaviour is the drift across a long session as the room warms with the machine in it.
