A cheap sensor with published accuracy and a history you can read back. Both of the guides that need one ask for a trend, not a reading.

This costs very little and it does the one thing that makes the measurement worth taking: it keeps a history. Both guides on this site that call for a sensor ask for a trend rather than a reading, and a dial hygrometer cannot supply one.

The problem it addresses

Two different problems, and they turn out to want the same instrument.

A gaming PC that throttles in summer and not in winter has an ambient problem, not a cooling problem — and the number that matters is the temperature of the air the case is actually drawing, which no software sensor can see. That argument is in is your gaming room too hot for your PC.

A garage that smells damp might be persistently humid or might be swinging into condensation overnight, and those need different remedies. Only a record over days separates them, which is the point made in how damp is your garage.

Both are trend questions. Neither is answered by looking at a dial.

Why the accuracy figure earns its place

The useful number for a PC is not the room temperature. It is the delta — component temperature minus intake air temperature — because that is the figure that stays constant when the season changes and moves when something is actually wrong.

A delta is a subtraction, so whatever error is in the ambient reading passes straight into the result. A sensor that might be two degrees out turns a delta argument into noise. One specified to ±0.32 °C does not, and that is the whole reason to prefer a sensor that publishes an accuracy figure over one that does not publish anything.

The same logic runs the other way in a garage. There, ±3% RH is coarse — but the question is whether the air sits at 70 percent for a week or spikes at dawn, and a three-point error changes neither answer.

What it does well

What it does badly

  • Battery changes arrive at six-month intervals you will not be expecting
  • Placement dominates accuracy, and no specification fixes that

Ugly score 4, and it earns it

A small white plastic square with an LCD, which is to say it looks like a clock radio component. On a desk it is unobtrusive; in a garage it is invisible.

Four rather than lower for a reason specific to how it gets used well: the right place for it at a PC is at the case intake, which frequently means on the floor beside a tower or cable-tied to a filter grille. Wherever it is genuinely useful is somewhere it looks out of place, which is the usual bargain this site makes.

Where it stops being the right tool

Bluetooth means you have to visit it

The device logs, and the log transfers to your phone when you are in range. For a desk sensor that is continuous. For a garage you enter weekly it is fine, because a week of data arrives in one sync.

For a loft, a shed at the end of a garden, or a holiday property, it is the wrong product — the history has gaps exactly where the interesting weather happened, and a Wi-Fi sensor with a hub is the correct purchase.

It cannot alert you

There is no threshold alarm without a hub. If the requirement is tell me when the garage goes over 65 percent, this is not that product. If the requirement is tell me what the garage did last week, it is exactly that product.

The app is the interface

Reading back history means a phone and an account. That is a reasonable trade at this price and it is a real one, and anyone who would rather not add another app to their phone should buy a dial and commit to walking out to look at it.

Who should buy it, and who should not

Buy it if a machine throttles in summer, if a garage smells damp, or if you are about to size a dehumidifier — that last one in particular, because a dehumidifier chosen by guesswork either runs pointlessly or cannot keep up.

Skip it for a sensor going somewhere you visit rarely, where the Bluetooth constraint removes most of the value. The wider set of instruments that replace guesses with measurements is in PC diagnostic tools that stop the guesswork.

Would we buy it again?

Yes, and probably two of them. The second sensor is what turns a reading into a comparison — intake air against room air, or garage against outside — and comparison is where all the diagnostic value in this category actually sits.

If this is not right for you

A dial hygrometer
Costs almost nothing, needs no battery or phone, and shows the current reading — which is genuinely adequate if you will actually walk out and look at it regularly.
A Wi-Fi sensor with a hub
Logs continuously without a phone in range and can alert on a threshold, which is the right answer for somewhere you visit rarely, at more cost and more setup.
The temperature sensors already in the machine
Free, and they report component temperatures — but none of them can see the air being drawn in, which is the number the whole diagnosis depends on.

Questions people actually ask

Why does logging matter more than the reading?
Because both problems it is bought for are trend problems. A garage is not damp because it reads 68 percent once; it is damp because it sits high for a week or swings hard overnight. And a PC does not throttle because the room is 24 degrees now, it throttles because the room climbs through the afternoon. A number tells you the moment. A history tells you the pattern.
Is ±0.32 °C accuracy meaningful at this price?
It matters for one specific reason. The useful figure for a PC is the *delta* — component temperature minus intake air — and a delta is a subtraction, so the error in the ambient reading passes straight through into it. A sensor that could be two degrees out makes a delta argument worthless; one specified to a third of a degree does not.
Does the Bluetooth range figure mean anything in a house?
Fifty metres is a clear line-of-sight number and a house is not that. Through a wall or two it will be far less. What matters practically is whether you pass within range often enough for the history to sync, which for a desk or a garage you visit weekly is fine and for a loft is not.
Can it be used in a garage as well as at a PC?
Yes, and it is arguably the better use. The garage question — is this persistent humidity or an overnight condensation swing — is answered by a week of logged highs and lows and by almost nothing else. Two sensors at this price is a reasonable thing to own.
What is the biggest source of error?
Where you put it. At a PC it belongs at the case intake, not across the room, because the gap between those two readings is itself the diagnosis. In a garage it belongs away from the door, out of sun and away from any heat source. No accuracy specification compensates for a sensor in the wrong place.
