PC Networking Problems Worth Diagnosing First

Bad gaming Wi-Fi, dropping USB devices and a NAT type you cannot change look unrelated. The cheap diagnosis comes first, and it usually costs nothing.

Networking faults on a PC arrive as symptoms that sound like different problems — games rubber-banding, USB devices vanishing, a NAT type that blocks party chat, a connection that speed-tests fine and plays badly.

Most of them are diagnosed cheaply, and the two steps that resolve the largest share cost nothing: move the antenna and swap the cable.

1. Establish what you are actually measuring

A speed test measures throughput. Games need consistency — steady latency, no spikes. A connection can be excellent at the first and poor at the second, which is why "my speed test is fine" and "my games are unplayable" are not in conflict.

2. Move things before buying things

Antenna orientation, and the position of the machine relative to the router, change Wi-Fi performance more than most upgrades do. A desktop under a metal desk against an interior wall is a shielded box.

3. Suspect the cable, because it is usually the cable

A marginal Ethernet cable produces intermittent, confusing symptoms rather than a clean failure — which is exactly what makes people replace network cards instead.

4. Getting wired, in a room you cannot drill

An unmanaged switch is the simple answer when one wall socket has to serve several machines. Nothing to configure, and it does not improve a connection — it divides one.

5. USB devices that disconnect, which is usually power

Devices dropping out is more often a power problem than a data one: too many on a single controller, or an unpowered hub asked to do more than it can. Windows suspending the port is the other frequent cause, and that one is a setting.

Its own power supply is the entire point — an unpowered hub is what causes the dropouts people blame on the devices. Check the supply's rating against what you intend to plug in.

6. The problems that are not the PC at all

NAT type is a router setting. It affects matchmaking and party chat rather than speed, and no hardware in the PC changes it — port forwarding and NAT type.

The mistake to avoid

Buying a network card to fix a position problem. Antenna placement, channel congestion and distance explain most poor Wi-Fi, and all three are free to test. A new card in the same slot in the same case under the same desk usually performs like the old one.

What should I try before buying anything?
Move the antenna or the machine, and try a different cable. Between them those two free steps resolve a large share of what gets diagnosed as a failing network card, and neither takes longer than a few minutes.
Why is my gaming Wi-Fi bad when speed tests look fine?
Because games care about consistency rather than throughput. A connection can post excellent download figures and still deliver the irregular latency that causes rubber-banding, so a speed test is close to the wrong measurement.
Is Ethernet always better than Wi-Fi?
For consistency, yes, and that is the property games need. The real question is what running it costs you in a room you cannot drill, which is where the flat-cable and powerline compromises come in.
Are powerline adapters any good?
