Reviving a Fuel System After Ethanol Damage

The carburettor gets cleaned first and blocks again within fifty miles. Everything upstream of it is what re-contaminates it, so it has to be done in order.

Work forwards from the tank, not backwards from the carburettor. The carburettor is where the symptom appears and the last place the work should happen — clean it first and whatever is still shedding upstream fills it again.

The usual culprit is fuel hose that predates ethanol in the fuel, degrading from the inside while looking entirely serviceable from the outside.

The problem, as it appears

The car ran, or nearly ran. The carburettor got stripped and cleaned properly and it ran well for a week — and now it is back to a rough idle and a stumble, with the same jets blocked again.

The conclusion people reach is that the cleaning was not thorough enough. It usually was.

Why cleaning the carburettor first disappoints

Because the carburettor is the end of the line, and it is the finest part of the system.

Everything that enters the fuel system ends up there, because that is where the smallest passages are. A carburettor with blocked jets is doing its job as the last filter in a chain — it is catching what the tank, the lines and the pump sent forward.

So a clean carburettor bolted back onto a system that is still shedding gets a fresh supply of the same debris. The interval before it recurs depends only on how fast the source produces it, and for degraded hose that can be a very short interval indeed.

Which is why the order is not a preference. Each stage feeds the next, so working from the tank forwards means every part you finish stays finished.

What actually matters

Old hose is the most-missed source

Rubber fuel hose specified before ethanol appeared in pump fuel degrades from the bore outwards.

That is the important part: the outside can look completely sound while the inside surface is breaking down and releasing fine dark particles continuously. Nothing about the exterior tells you, which is why it survives inspection and keeps being reused during a rebuild.

The tells are indirect — hose that has gone soft or oddly stiff, a weep at a union without a visible drip, a fuel smell that was not there before, and fine sediment collecting in the filter. Cutting a short length open settles it immediately.

Replacement wants hose explicitly marked for modern fuel. What you are buying is the rating printed on the wall, not the appearance, and reproduction hose sold to look right in a period engine bay is not automatically rated for current fuel.

The tank rusts at the top

Counter-intuitive and worth knowing, because it explains a tank that looks clean and is not.

A tank stored part-full has a large air space above the fuel. That air carries moisture, and the bare metal up there has no protective fuel film on it. So corrosion tends to form above the fuel level rather than at the bottom, out of sight of anyone looking through the filler.

Debris arriving at the filter with a visually clean tank bottom is the usual way this announces itself.

If a liner is the answer, it is only the answer with the preparation the product specifies. Applied over remaining rust it eventually lifts, and sheets of detached liner are a far worse problem for a fuel system than the rust they covered.

A clear filter is a diagnostic instrument

The cheapest useful thing in this whole job.

Fitting a clear inline filter lets you see what is arriving rather than infer it. Run the car, then look: fine black particles point at hose, orange-brown flakes point at the tank, and a filter that stays clean tells you the upstream work is done.

It also means the next problem announces itself before it reaches the carburettor.

The pump is easy to forget

Mechanical pumps use a diaphragm, and diaphragms are made of exactly the sort of material that has had a difficult time with modern fuel. A perished one leaks internally, delivers poorly, or in the worst case passes fuel into the engine oil.

Electric pumps mostly suffer from gumming rather than perishing, and a pump that has sat in stale fuel may free up or may not.

Either way it sits between the tank and the carburettor, so it belongs in the sequence rather than after it.

The carburettor last, and properly

By the time you get here, the supply is clean and the work stays done.

The method — reading the symptom by throttle position, never opening out a jet, ignition before mixture — is the whole of carburettor cleaning and re-tuning.

Old fuel is waste, not a candidate for treatment

Stabiliser slows degradation in fuel that is still sound. It does not restore fuel that has already gone.

Fuel that has darkened, separated into layers, or smells of varnish is finished, and treating it just means putting treated bad fuel through a system you are in the middle of cleaning. It also needs disposing of properly rather than down a drain.

One safety note, briefly

Fuel work means fuel vapour, which is heavier than air and collects at floor level in a closed garage. Ventilation, no ignition sources, and a fire extinguisher within reach rather than across the room.

The order to work in

  1. Drain the old fuel and dispose of it properly.
  2. Inspect the tank, remembering to look above the fuel line.
  3. Replace every flexible hose with correctly rated hose. All of it.
  4. Fit a clear inline filter where you can see it.
  5. Check or replace the pump.
  6. Then the carburettor.
  7. Fill with fresh fuel and run it.
  8. Look at the filter again after a short run — that is the test.

The mistake to avoid

Reusing hose that looks fine. It is the single most common reason this job gets done twice, because the failure is on the inside surface and there is no external symptom until something else blocks. Hose is inexpensive relative to a second carburettor strip, and replacing all of it — including the short lengths at the pump and the tank union that are easy to leave — is what makes the rest of the work hold.

The second mistake is starting at the carburettor because that is where the symptom is. It is the finest filter in the system, so it collects everything the rest of the system releases, and cleaning it first means cleaning it again. Working forwards from the tank feels slower and is the only sequence where each stage stays finished — the same ordering discipline as first inspection after long storage.

Questions people actually ask

What replaces the old hose?
Hose explicitly rated for modern fuel — the marking on the outer wall is what you are buying, not the appearance. Reproduction hose sold on looks for a period-correct engine bay is not automatically rated for current pump fuel, and that is worth checking rather than assuming.
