Nobody mentions it, because it is not audible to them. What is audible to them is that you are louder than you were — and after an hour, that you sound tired.

Why turning the microphone up disappoints

Because the problem is not on the way out, it is on the way in.

Normally you hear yourself two ways at once: through the air, arriving at your ears like any other sound, and through your own bone conduction. Cover your ears and the first path is largely removed while the second is untouched, so what remains is the low, internal, muffled version.

The mistake to avoid

Assuming you are loud because your microphone is bad. The outgoing signal is usually fine, and adjusting gain or buying a better microphone changes nothing about how you hear yourself — which is where the behaviour originates. Fix the return path, not the send.

The second mistake is leaving a laggy software sidetone switched on because the feature is supposed to help. If your own voice arrives behind you, it will interfere with your speech rather than steady it, and turning it off is the correct move — the same principle as mute that actually mutes: what the setting is called matters much less than what the audio path is actually doing.
