The 12 V Battery in an Electric Car
The traction pack can be full and the car still dead. There is an ordinary little battery in there, it fails the ordinary way, and almost nobody checks it.

A full traction battery does not start an electric car. There is an ordinary 12 V lead-acid battery in there, and it powers the computers, the lights and — critically — the contactors that connect the big pack to everything else. Flat 12 V, contactors open, and a pack at 80% is electrically irrelevant.
It is a cheap, ordinary battery in an expensive car, it fails the same way every other one does, and almost nobody checks it because there is no starter motor to sound tired first.

The problem, as it appears
The car will not wake. No lights, no screens, possibly no way to open it if the handles are electric. The app says the battery is at 74%.
Everything about the situation says the car should work, and the recovery driver arrives, connects a jump pack to a 12 V battery you may not have known existed, and the car starts.
Why the obvious assumption disappoints
The obvious assumption is that an electric car has one battery. It has two systems, and the small one is the one that strands you.
Two things make it fail differently from the battery in a petrol car:
It is not charged by an alternator. A DC-DC converter steps voltage down from the traction pack, and it runs on the car's own schedule rather than continuously whenever the engine turns. On some cars, on some settings, a car left alone for a long period tops the 12 V up rarely.
There is no warning noise. A tired battery in a petrol car announces itself by cranking slowly for weeks before it strands you. An EV either wakes or does not. The failure is binary and arrives without the audible countdown everyone has learned to listen for.
The result is a battery that gets no attention at all until the morning it fails.

What actually matters
1. Knowing its resting voltage before it matters
This is the whole preventative measure. A monitor across the 12 V terminals logging resting voltage over days tells you the trend — and a trend is what you want, because a single reading on a good day tells you very little.
Falling resting voltage over weeks is the signal. It arrives long before the morning the car does not wake.

2. Testing it properly rather than reading a number
Voltage alone does not tell you whether a battery can still deliver current. A tester that loads it gives you the answer that matters, and it is a five-minute job.

3. Knowing the procedure before you need it
This is the one to do today rather than at the roadside. Find, in your own handbook:
- Where the 12 V battery physically is. It is frequently not under the bonnet, and on some cars it is not readily accessible at all.
- The designated jump points, which on many EVs are terminals in the engine bay rather than the battery itself.
- How to open the car and release the charge port if the 12 V is dead. Many have a mechanical override, and it is usually somewhere you would not guess.
Read that once now. Reading it on a phone at 8% in a car park is a different experience.
The options, and who each suits
A jump pack in the boot
The same tool as for any other car, doing the same job on the same 12 V system. It is worth saying plainly that this works, because people assume an EV needs something exotic.
Budget lithium jump starter
Jumps the 12 V system, which is what has actually failed. Use the manufacturer's designated points — on many EVs those are not the battery terminals.

Never use the EV to jump start another car. The DC-DC converter is not designed to supply that, and manufacturers say so explicitly.
A maintainer, if the car sits
For a second car, a car stored over winter, or long periods away. Ordinary 12 V maintainers work; a permanently fitted lead makes connecting one a thirty-second job rather than a reason not to bother.

Replacing it on age rather than on failure
Unfashionable and correct. It is one of the cheapest components in the car, and its failure mode is total immobilisation with a full pack. Replacing a four-year-old 12 V battery that has started drifting is a good trade in a way it rarely is on a petrol car, where you get weeks of warning.
The mistake to avoid
Assuming the traction battery's health tells you anything about the 12 V. They are separate systems with separate failure modes, and the dashboard is generous about one and silent about the other.
The second mistake is discovering the jump procedure at the roadside. On some cars the bonnet release is electric, which means a dead 12 V can lock you out of the compartment containing the jump points — and the mechanical override is documented in a handbook that is, on many EVs, only available on a screen that will not turn on.
