Preventing a Dead Battery in Winter Storage

Why a healthy battery goes flat over three months, how to measure the parasitic draw actually doing it, and the free fixes to try before you buy anything.

A battery that goes flat over a winter has usually not failed. It has been discharged by the car it is attached to, slowly, for three months, and then asked to deliver its highest current of the year on the coldest morning.

Understanding which of those is happening to you decides what you should do about it, and one of the answers is free.

Two separate things are draining it

Self-discharge happens inside the battery regardless of what it is connected to. It is slow, and on its own it rarely kills a healthy battery over a single winter.

Parasitic draw is the car drawing current with the key out: clock, radio memory, ECU keep-alive, alarm, tracker, aftermarket accessories. This is almost always the dominant term, and on a modified or much-loved older car it is frequently far higher than the factory intended, because forty years of additions have accumulated.

The practical consequence: if your battery dies in storage, the car is usually the culprit, and buying a maintainer treats the symptom. That may be entirely the right call — but it is worth knowing which you are doing.

Measuring the draw

This is a genuinely useful diagnostic and needs only a multimeter:

  1. Let the car sleep properly first. Many systems stay awake for many minutes after locking, so a reading taken immediately will be misleadingly high.
  2. Disconnect the negative terminal and put the meter in series between the terminal and the post, set to a current range that can handle the initial surge.
  3. Read the steady-state current once things have settled.

A figure in the tens of milliamps is unremarkable on a car with electronics. A figure in the hundreds means something is not going to sleep, and finding it by pulling fuses one at a time is tedious but straightforward.

Reading the battery before you decide anything

A multimeter across the terminals, after the battery has rested for a few hours, tells you where you are starting from. These are the standard figures for a 12V lead-acid battery at rest:

Take the reading after the car has sat, not straight after a drive. A recently charged battery carries a surface charge that reads high and disappears under the first real load, which is how people conclude a battery is fine in November and discover otherwise in March.

Why a flat battery in a cold garage is worse than it sounds

State of charge changes the freezing point dramatically. A fully charged lead-acid battery is safe far below anything a garage will reach. A fully discharged one can freeze at around minus 8 Celsius — comfortably within range of an unheated garage in much of the world — and freezing splits cases and buckles plates.

So "charge it before putting it away" is not just about having a usable battery in spring. It is the difference between a battery that survives a cold snap and one that is destroyed by it.

Disconnect the negative terminal. Costs nothing, removes the parasitic draw entirely. You lose radio presets and alarm state, and on some cars with electronic memory you lose settings that are irritating to restore. On a simpler classic, this is often the whole answer. Fix the draw you found. If measuring turned up something that should not be awake, that is a fault worth fixing regardless of storage, because it is doing the same thing all year.

Charge it fully before storage. A battery put away at partial charge starts the winter behind, and a discharged battery is far more vulnerable to freezing. This costs nothing and is frequently skipped.

When to buy something

If the car is stored somewhere with power, and you want it startable at any point through the winter, a maintainer is the correct purchase — it addresses both self-discharge and parasitic draw without you losing anything.

The mistake to avoid

Starting the car every fortnight and letting it idle for ten minutes is worse than doing nothing. It does not put back the charge the starter took, and it fills the exhaust and crankcase with moisture that never gets hot enough to be driven off. If you are going to run it, drive it properly warm. Otherwise leave it alone and manage the battery directly.

Questions people actually ask

How long does a car battery last with nothing connected?
A healthy lead-acid battery in good condition self-discharges slowly enough to survive several months disconnected in moderate temperatures. Connected to a car with normal parasitic loads, the same battery will typically be too flat to crank in a matter of weeks. The difference is the car, not the battery.
What is a normal parasitic draw?
Generally in the tens of milliamps for a car with a clock, an ECU and an alarm; an older car with no electronics may be close to zero once everything is off. What matters is not hitting a published number but knowing your own figure, because a draw an order of magnitude above normal points at a fault worth finding.
Does cold weather drain a battery?
Cold does not drain it so much as reduce the current it can deliver and slow the chemistry, so a partly discharged battery that would start the car in summer will not in winter. Cold also slows self-discharge slightly. The risk of freezing applies to a discharged battery, whose electrolyte freezes at a far higher temperature than a charged one — which is a good reason not to leave one flat.
What resting voltage means the battery is actually full?
Around 12.6 to 12.7 volts for a 12V lead-acid battery, measured after it has rested for a few hours with nothing connected. Roughly 12.4V is about three-quarters charged, 12.2V about half, and anything below about 12.0V is discharged enough to be doing damage if it stays there. Measure after resting, not straight after a drive, or the surface charge will flatter the reading.
Can a battery actually freeze in a garage?
A discharged one can, and that is the real argument for storing it charged. A fully charged lead-acid battery does not freeze until far below any temperature a garage reaches, while a fully discharged one can freeze at around minus 8 Celsius. Freezing splits cases and destroys plates, so the free act of charging it before lay-up is also the insurance.
Will a solar maintainer work instead of mains?
Sometimes, and it is the only real option where there is no socket. The requirements are honest daylight on the panel — which a closed garage does not provide — and a proper charge controller, because an uncontrolled panel can overcharge a battery just as a constant-current charger does. Treat panel wattage claims sceptically and check a controller is included.
